Chapter 6
play fight rawr ♡
Ana and Rocco brought me to the house a few days before the wedding to show me around meaning I am well-acquainted with my new home and so find Cavallaro's office in no time.
A large man in a suit stands sentinel at the door. His bushy eyebrows lift when his gaze lands on my fluffy socks but I ignore the judgement.
✗ don't Kick things that Piss You Off.
"Miss," he nods in greeting but my hand halts on the doorknob and I turn towards him.
Pinning him with a hard glare, I clear my throat to get his attention, "It's Mrs," I speak through gritted teeth, "Mrs Donatelli."
I notice as he swallows and I silently hope the reaction comes from nerves or fear that I have created but in reality I know it's because he fears that I might complain to my husband. He nods in acknowledgement and I arch a brow.
This time, he is the one who clears his throat, looking visibly flustered, "uh, sorry, Mrs Donatelli, my bad."
I nod before finally pushing the heavy set office doors open.
My nose is instantly assailed with the smell of lemons and worn leather, it scrunches at the unusual combination but as the doors thud closed behind me and I meet the cold gaze of my husband, all thoughts of scent, unusual or otherwise, float from my mind.
"Lyra," a voice announces itself from the couch, "it's nice to see you again."
I turn away from Cavallaro to meet the gaze of Tommaso Leone. I smile and offer him my hand which he accepts, kissing the back softly, "And you, Mr. Leone, I'm sorry to have interrupted you both."
Tommaso waves his hand, "Nonsense, this is your house, si?" I smile at him, "I was just discussing Commission business with your husband."
Contrary to what the rest of the world may think, the global crime syndicates are answerable to something: the Commission.
The Commission is essentially a governing body that acts as a committee which rules over all the familia's of the world. It is supposed to be impartial with the five members having no blood ties or familial relations to any prominent crime families. Additionally, membership is passed down to male heirs, never had there been a female member of the commission — a fact which pissed me off to no end. Whilst Commission representatives aren't directly involved in organised crime, they gain money and power through bribes and by supporting families who in turn increase their value; they are therefore guilty by association. Commission families are as prominent and powerful as the top mafia's around the world.
Currently, the Commission is comprised of two Russian representatives, two Italian representatives and one British representative.
Tommaso Leone is good friends with Rocco and by extension Cavallaro. He tries his best to remain impartial but him and his family have always looked out for Donatelli interests.
Giuseppe Manzo is the second Italian representative. He is allied with Giovanni Romano who is Cavallaro's direct rival. The Romano and Donatelli's have been butting heads for years but they have yet to come to direct blows.
Ivan Kozlov and and Markiv Zima are the Russian representatives. Ivan tends to agree more with Giuseppe and Giovanni's policies whereas Markiv tends to prefer Tommaso's and Cavallaro's input.
Finally, the British representative is William Davenport who went to school with me when I was growing up in England. We are actually quite good friends and he has helped me a lot through the years, keeping me updated on systems back home. William took his father's position in the Commission a few years ago but unfortunately, regardless of our friendship, William has remained impartial to proceedings, always supporting the most logical decision; like demanding Cavallaro fulfil his marriage contract with me as punishment for landing himself in jail.
