I usually spent my days after school hanging out with the whole friend group: Koichi, Josuke, Okuyasu, and Yukako. We were all really close, but I didn't like to hang out with just one other person, especially if it's Josuke. Every moment Josuke and I had with just the two of us, it was filled with awkward silence. Don't get me wrong, we are great friends, it's just I'm so nervous to talk to him. What would happen if I tell him I like him? Would that ruin our friendship? What about the whole group? What if he doesn't like me back? The list goes on and on. Josuke had invited me over to his house, as well as Okuyasu and Koichi. We planned on all meeting at his house, but as I'm standing on his front porch, I got a call from Koichi.
"Hey, funny story..."
"Koichi..... don't tell me you guys aren't gonna show up." I knew them all too well, they did this last time we were all supposed to hang out too.
"Look I'm sorry but I gotta go, I'll explain later ok?" Koichi was speaking quickly, trying to beat whatever stern voice was in the background. If it were my best bet, him and Okuyasu got in trouble again with their math teacher. So now I was standing in front of Josuke's house. Alone. With a big fat crush. Taking a deep breath in, I walked up to the door and knocked quietly. Maybe it won't even be that bad, I thought to myself. Soon after knocking, I hear someone running down the stairs, rushing to get to the door. The door swings open, and Josuke greets me with the widest grin I've ever seen.
"Hey!! Come in!" Josuke stepped to the side and waved me in. "Where are Okuyasu and Koichi?"
"Funny story..." The both of us were walking up the stairs when I told him. "I think they got in trouble in school again."
Josuke turned his head to look at me behind him, giving a look that said not again written all over him. I smiled and shook my head.
"Those idiots." Josuke opened his bedroom door and was hurrying me to set my bags down.
"So..." Josuke's eyes darted around the room before making contact with mine, "I got this new game, wanna play? It's 2-player." I held my hand out to be handed a controller. We sat on the edge of his bed and played the new game he bought, Super Mario Brothers. It was actually pretty fun, the mechanics were simple, and it gave me a chance to let Josuke talk to me more. The levels were getting harder and harder as hours went by, but with every hour passing, Josuke and I began to get closer. Not only emotionally, but physically too. By the time we had reached Bowser's castle to fight him and save the princess, our legs were against eachother. As we had beat each level, Josuke began to talk to me more kindly, and treat me daintily. It was actually really nice to see this part of him, without Koichi and Okuyasu around. However, it had been a couple of hours and our little Mario brothers stood outside the final level; Bowser's castle.
"You ready?" Josuke winked at me.
"Ready as I'll ever be." I smiled and winked back at him. We entered the castle, and began our boss battle with Bowser to get to Peach. Josuke had made quick work of Bowser, he was able to get behind him and drop the bridge so Bowser fell into lava, and it felt too easy. And too easy was right. A second Bowser came from the lava, bigger than before and the timer started. Nearly yelling at eachother, we made our plumbers run as fast as they could in the lava terrain, and with a few bubbles and a few lives lost, we made it to the end. Bowser had been defeated, causing Josuke to leap off the bed and holler from our shared victory.
The game hadn't ended yet however, there was a final cutscene. Peach floated down, and kissed the red plumber on the cheek. Josuke paused for a moment, gears turning in his head.
"I wish I could be Mario in that scene." He smiled faintly at you. Oh my god. Wait. This is your moment. He wants to kiss. Is it? Wait, am I getting ahead of myself? Why else would he say that? My face had turned bright red. Without a second thought, the words escaped from my mouth.
"I wish I could be Peach." My stomach was in knots. I couldn't make eye contact with Josuke. The silence of the room crept in. Josuke hadn't said anything yet. God, I really messed it up. Soft footsteps padded on the carpet.
"Hey, do you still want it to be a wish?" Josuke whispered softly. I looked up to meet his gaze as he stood in front of me. Go for it. Do it now. Standing up to meet his height, I put my lips on his. I was fast to get on his lips, and he seemed surprised at first but he relaxed into the kiss. His lips were soft, and it took too long to finally feel them after chasing him for so long.
"Josuke. I've had the fattest crush on you for years." I pulled away from the kiss and hugged him tightly, my head on his chest. His arms wrapped around my body, pulling me in closer.
"I don't know how I never noticed it. I wish I acted sooner, I've been crushing on you for too long. I didn't know until Oku told me you liked me." Josuke had regret in his voice.
"Hey, I'm glad I finally got the chance to kiss you. Thank goodness for Okuyasu." I reached my hands out to cup his face and look at me, giving him a gentle smile. Josuke bent down for another kiss, this time he held my hips tight, and pressed hard into the kiss, releasing pent up love from the past years.
I couldn't help but chuckle during his kiss. He pulled away.
"What's wrong? Did I mess up the kiss?" Josuke was very concerned. Looking up at him, another giggle came out.
"It took me this long to finally kiss you, Josuke. I laugh because I was so worried about if you liked me back. But here we are." Josuke's look of concern dropped. He nodded his head in agreement and pulled me in again for an even tighter hug.
