Chapter 4 | Outpour

A gush of piercing cold forced its way through your veins as you shut your eyes.

The foreign, icy flow rushed through your blood like a torrent in the split of a second. It didn't stop. You gasped in horror as the scalding pain intensified and suspended your movements. Where did that come from?

You remembered a malignant-looking dog dashing towards you before you closed your eyes in dismay. You couldn't help with the powerless behaviour, the divine dog was as ready as ever to devour you on the spot as Fushiguro senpei pronounced the attack like a death sentence.

What now?

It's fearful claws and fangs were out, the eyes revealed a fiery glow. It had looked too destructive for you to open your eyes. Though you had felt nothing, its teeth were not buried in your nape, your body was unharmed, your clothes were unscathed. A blistering cold struck you instead.

You opened your eyes at last.

Surprised. The pool of black shadows were now invisible, the domain was no longer there. So was the divine dog. You looked around and saw no sight of it. But surely it was there? The electric pain earlier had subsided ever so slightly, you pushed yourself off the ground and forced yourself to stand up. Confused, you searched for Fushiguro senpei.

" Whatever that was... I'm still alive!? "

Megumi's surprise earlier was nothing compared to what he saw just now.

His divine dog had disappeared.

He saw it dashing towards the girl at full speed and outstretching its claws, but before anything occurred Totality vanished before her all of a sudden. Just inches from her face. To be exact it was more like the thing dived right into the girl.

Megumi could still feel the presence of his divine dog, however it had become much weaker, almost non-detectable. The dense cursed energy it possessed had also significantly diminished. He was even more bewildered when he realized the domain he constructed earlier had been dissolved, silently and inconspicuously. Megumi was annoyed, he had used a considerable amount of his cursed energy to build the domain and control it carefully so the girl wouldn't get hurt. Now it simply vanished into the unknown before he could even withdraw the shadows. It felt like something which originally belonged to him had been ruthlessly teared away.

Haruki couldn't possibly have killed the shikigami or escaped the domain, her sword lay flat on the ground and her body remained frozen since the attack. Not that she looked any less confused than himself.

Though her palm was held out right before the shadows vanished, the rash action somehow worried him - could it be a cursed technique? The ability to absorb one's opponent made of cursed energy.
