Tyler was running for his fucking life.

He could hear the kidnappers' grunt of annoyance as they neared him. He would have sped up if not for the nail cruelly embedded in the underside of his foot.

It was a bright sunny morning and Tyler Mario had no intention of stepping out of his warm blankets into the cold fall air. He could already hear the rest of the house getting ready for their day. Snuggling in deeper, he closed his eyes in a futile attempt to reenter the land of dreams.

Futile because his mother began yelling his name from the entrance of the room, banging at the locked door to wake her son up in time for school. He grunted a loud,"I'm awake" and trudged toward his adjoining bathroom.

Today was like yesterday as yesterday was like the day before. Absolutely boring.

He dressed up in black sneakers, blue jeans, a grey Marvel T-shirt and a red hoodie just in time for his clock to knack eight. Guess no hair time today. Running a quick brush through his hair, he hurried downstairs to get breakfast before the bus came.

The bus arrived by eight fifteen which meant fifteen minutes of watching his family go around their routines as he did every day. His mother was making pancakes on the electric cooker while his father was sitting at the table waiting for breakfast to be served before e leaving for work in his shiny red car. His sisters were already down, their shiny blonde hair packed in different styles.

As usual, everyone ignored little Pete, crying in the corner with the puppy howling its head off in tune to the baby's wails. Sighing, he picked the both of them up and took them to the bathroom to give them baths. He would dry the puppy with a towel and dress the baby just in time for his mother to yell, "Breakfast!"

The bus was already parked in front of the house and they had five minutes before it left. Then they would have to forfeit school that day as both their parents had to go to work and drop Pete at the daycare and there was only one car in their garage.

With five pancakes thrown into a Ziploc bag, Tyler ran outside and again just managed to catch the bus. His sisters were already seated by that time. The driver scowled at him and he muttered, "Sorry".

His friends, Bert and Alex were waiting for him at the rear end of the bus.

"Late again", scolded Alex. He was the nerdy one who love books and science fiction and getting good grades, minus the glasses. "Hello to you too," Tyler said, trying to keep his pancakes out of reach of Bert.

Bert was the sporty one. He was on the basketball team and sometimes played for the football team too. He was tall with dark hair and wore glasses as he couldn't see two feet in front of his face. He did not see eye to eye with Alex.

"Let him be, nerd", he said, smiling triumphantly as Tyler cut a piece of the pancake and offered it to him.

"Says the one with the glasses stuck to his nose," Alex threw back. "It's like this every day. Can't someone else look after Pete and Max?"
Max was the dog. "One of these days the bus is gonna leave you. How are you going to get to school then?"

Alex said this with the knowledge that the school was far away from his home and a the nearest taxi was at a bus stop equally as far. It was a lose lose situation for Tyler.

"I'll manage. I mean, if not me then it's no one else. Lexie and Marie are basically always on their phones and my parents are busy," he said, taking a particularly big bite out of his pancake, angrily scrunching his face.
