Yuuki's pov
I wiped the towel over my face to clear the sweat. Kamoshida had made us work extra hard today after the boys team almost lost in our last professional game against a rival school. I got a few people giving me annoyed looks. I turned my head away to try and avoid them. They blamed me for today's events. I couldn't quite blame them. I had messed up really hard in that game. I had to be benched because of it. I tossed the dirty towel into the basket and swapped back into my uniform. I could just head home and curl up in my bed until the pain went away. I picked up my bag and started walking towards the entrance. I froze before I walked through the doors. Someone was sat at the door. I couldn't see their face since it was tilted down towards a notebook that was perched against their legs but I could see their light brown hair that fell over their shoulders. I stepped back. I got a few stares from some guys who walked past and out the double doors. I watched the girl from my spot. She looked up, eyes following them. I didn't get to see what she did next since the doors swung closed. I stepped up to them and leaned on my tiptoes. She turned away from looking at the doors and back to her notebook. It didn't look like she was going to leave anytime soon. I would just have to hope she doesn't come up to me. I push the door open, cursing in my head for how loud it was. Almost immediately, she looked up. I turned my head away, picking up the pace of my walk. Until I heard a thud that was accompanied by a squeak. I turned around and saw that she was lying flat on the floor, bag straps caught around her ankles. I hesitated before approaching, crouching down next to her head.
"A-Are you ok" I mumbled, rubbing one arm with my hand. She lifted her head, making eye contact with me before making another noise and pushing herself into a sitting position.
"So stupid. Way to embarrass yourself" she scolded herself.
"Um..... Need h-help?" she turns to me, seeming to suddenly remember that I was here. She opened her mouth then closed it again. Then she hit the side of her head and I cried out, falling back onto my butt in surprise.
"N-no. I was ac-actually looking for you" she reached into her back pocket and offered me something. I looked at it.
"Why would I want your phone?" I titled my head. Confusion lit up her face before she looked down at her phone, followed by a heavy groan as she hit her hands against her face, phone still clutched in one. She reached into her pocket again and pulled out a second phone.
"I meant this one" she sighs. I look at it. Wait that phone looks familiar. I pat at my pockets but I couldn't find it. I took the phone from her hands and clicked the screen on. It was definitely mine. But how did this girl get my phone.
"You dropped it when I ran into you earlier" she seemed to read my mind.
"O-oh. Thanks" I mumbled. A couple more guys walked out of the gym and past us. They looked at the two of us and one stopped. He looked at the two of us. I could feel his eyes on my skin.
"Hey girly. What are you doing on the floor with someone like him? Aren't there better guys to go for?" he looked at her and I think he was coming up with plans. I guess that made sense. It probably looked weird for us to be on the ground together, especially right in the middle of the corridor. And anyone looked nice in comparison to me so it figures that they'd think she was willing to go for virtually anyone if that was the case. Her mouth clamped shut and her arms came to her chest. When she didn't answer, he started getting pushy.
"Well, answer the question" he demanded, stepping closer. She ducked her head. As much as I didn't want to admit it, her current position was familiar. I'd done similar things in hopes of protecting myself from my bullies, Kamoshida and even my parents. My chest tightened.
"H-hey. L-leave her al-alone" I demanded. He turned to me, raised eyebrow and a smirk.
"And what are you going to do? You can't even hit a ball right and you think you can fight someone" He laughed. My sudden boost in confidence crashed down as quickly as it had come. He was right. I was useless. Then he was hit on the head by something. I looked. A water bottle. Where had that come from? Before I could do anything, someone grabbed my wrist and I was being dragged away. I turned to look. The girl was clutching my wrist and pulling me towards the school entrance. She let go when we'd passed the doors.
"S-sorry. I just.... I didn't want to watch someone else get hurt because of me" she ducked her head down and held her hands together, bag slung over one shoulder.
"Oh. I-its ok" she looks to me. Then up at the sky.
"Wanna go out..... like a hangout.... you know, like friends" I blinked at her. She quickly grew flustered.
"I-if you wanna be friends that is. I won't force you or anything" she clutched her hands close to her chest. No one had ever tried to be friends with me before.
"Ummm. Ok.... M-my names Yuuki M-"
"Mishima. Yeah. I've seen you playing volleyball during P.E a few times" she mumbled. I looked down then over at her. She blinked with a bit of confusion then it seemingly clicked.
"Oh Yeah. I never said my name. I'm Ara Akiya" she slowly extended her hand. I took it, giving a slight shake.
"I know a good place to go" I offer. She nods, gesturing for me to lead the way. I stick close to her. We both stayed in silence for the entire trip to the train station. It was kind of comfortable.
