Present Day"Jordan!" I squeal. "Stop! Please!"
"Dude, you need to get out again. It's been 3 weeks since Dom broke up with you and all you've done since is mope."
"I'm not moping!" I protest, dragging my feet across the ground slowly as my best friend tugs me into the line for a nightclub, which we are defiantly not old enough to be at, especially on a school night.
"Ooo Jordan, why does nobody love me? Jordan, I don't think I'll ever smile again. My heart is shuttered, Jordan." He imitates me in a high pitched voice, attracting the attention of the other people waiting in line. I stomp on his foot, making him whine.
"Quit it!" I scorn him. "I don't sound like that."
"Oliver, those are all actual quotes that have come out of your mouth. I've been noting them down on my phone."
"What?" I whisper harshly. "Seriously Jordan, I just want to go home and play video games. Plus, it's a school night and we have a biology test third period."
"As if you ever cared about biology before." Jordan laughs, holding me in place tighter. He's right, I don't, but right now I'd rather be revising then out here. Don't get me wrong, I'm not usually the type to stay cooped up in my room every night blocking out the world, but since Dom broke up with me I haven't been interested in anything anymore. I just want to lay in bed, cry, eat chocolate, and repeat. Forever. But apparently Jordan has other plans for me, ones that include actually feeling fresh air against my skin and interacting with other people. And probably alcohol.
"How are we even going to get into this place? We're 17 you know." I say, looking for any excuse to get away from here and run all the way back to my room. We had tried to get into bars before, sure, but we never got past the bouncer due to our lack of ID and the clear youthfulness of our appearances.
To answer my question, Jordan pulls two ID cards out of his pocket and waves them right in front of my nose. I snatch one from him, flipping it over in my fingers a few times as I scan the laminated card that has a small photo of me on it that doesn't look that obviously photoshopped if you squint. I guess we could get away with it if the bouncer isn't paying too much attention, but hopefully we won't. Honestly, I'm just in the mood to spend the whole night playing Mario kart alone, not deal with this bullshit.
"How did you get these?" I ask, handing the card back to Jordan who smiles wickedly.
"My dad hooked me up with some guy from work."
"Your dad?" I ask sceptically, calling bullshit on his story.
"Unbelievable right? It's like ever since the divorce he's been trying to be the 'cool parent' so that I don't decide to live with mum instead." Jordan shrugs, a pang of pain in his eyes when he talks about his parents, though this is quickly masked by his playful aura. "Last week, he offered to buy me cocaine."
"Now you're making this up." I laugh, despite myself, then instantly feel guilty as the weight of heartbreak settles back in, crushing down on my chest. Every time I laugh I'm reminded of Dom, of all the good times that we shared.
"Nah I'm just kidding. But seriously he did offer to get me these IDs. Think he feels bad about mum not calling on my birthday."
"You don't need her anyways." I smile, clapping him on the back reassuringly. As we talk the line becomes shorter and shorter, and eventually we are right outside of the doors. From here I can feel the music vibrating through the floor, and the neon lights are so bright I can already feel a migraine forming at the front of my skull.
