A long, weary sigh rippled through Todd Adams as he gazed through the window pane. He stared at his reflection emotionless. Todd had curly, shiny, black hair and sparkling hazel eyes which usually lit up with emotion. He was tall and lanky, but he slouched a lot, as if his head was too heavy for his neck so his hand supported the wash of emotion and memories that flooded his young mind. Freckles adorned his face and made him look youthful and pure whilst his heavy eyebrows - constantly pulled into a frown - had an aging effect: his real age was 18. 

Todd Adams had turned 18 just the day before and he didn't enjoy it. He lived with his mother in a small bungalow; his 3 sisters: Lucy, Lily and Laura, had left a long time ago, as soon as they could. Lucy and Lily now lived somewhere in America after they got talent spotted by an agent, they weren't famous but they earned money and avoided their past at the same time. What could be better? He occasionally saw one or both of the twins on commercials. Laura wasn't so lucky and she lived on the other side of London, she still avoided contact though. The birthday had been a lonely affair, Andria, his mother had cooked his favourite dinner and gave him a few well earned bank notes. He had secretly put them back in their miniscule account.

It had been a dark and scary trip to the 'bank'.

As Todd scanned the dark, rainy area outside - a now useful habit - he thought of his father. Nathaniel Adams had been an average man. He owned a large cosmetics company and earned more than others, he didn't boast about it though, times were too hard for that. They donated as much as they could without starving themselves and were seen as generous. However, Nathaniel had been exposed by the 'police'; he had been testing his chemicals on animals and was taken away. The girls moved out quickly but Todd stayed with his mother - she needed looking after. 

It had to be animals. He could have used alternative methods. Dad knew how the government felt about animal cruelty.

Why did he have to do it?

A look of disgust passed over Todd's face. His father had done wrong - they all knew that - but he had quickly shut down the company and had released all animals. Well... the ones that hadn't died. He did what he did to keep his family alive. Personally, he hated his Dad for what he did but knew what a good man he was inside. The government didn't though. He was taken away for 'punishment'... everybody knew he was dead. 

The so-called government was corrupt and thought to be run  by a form of extremists. After all, they used the death penalty! They ought to be 'punished' themselves! A red hot rage boiled inside of Todd and his eyes transformed into flat dark discs. People deserved better. The group of people running the country was small, but they had eyes everywhere, spies lurked round every corner. They had taken over in the deadly recession that had broken the United Kingdom and although the country was in better shape, the people weren't. They had struck hard on animal cruelty for some reason, but the people of their country seemed to be dwindling in numbers. 

Just then there was a hard, insistent rapping on the door.

All this thinking had left him distracted. He hadn't been checking outside.

Again and again and again. 

Todd glanced across the one roomed house he now lived in. His eyes met with his mother's - worry creasing her face. Her panicked eyes bored into his and he knew what had to be done.

Andria crept over to the back door and left it open just a crack - enough for Todd to get through. She  dragged after her two small backpacks.

Todd closed his eyes as he opened the door.
