"So did you know this was a pairs contest, Drew?" May asked, her mouth slightly stuffed with food as she said it.
"Yeah, I found out on my way here." Drew nodded, setting his glass of orange juice on the table. He and May sat across from each other at a table in the Pokemon Centre cafeteria, next to the large glass windows which gave them a nice view of the city. Drew was still attempting to ease his throbbing heart which had started beating fast the moment his eyes fell on May when he entered the Pokemon Centre. He felt relieved and happy yet nervous when he saw her. After the weeks they had spent apart, seeing her before him evoked overwhelming emotions that he never thought he could feel all at once. His neck was hot and even the cold juice he was drinking did little to help. "I figured I would recognize another coordinator who I could partner with. And you were the only coordinator I knew when I got here besides Trisa, the blind coordinator you were talking to."
"Oh you know her?" May was surprised.
"Yeah, she's pretty well known considering she's the only blind coordinator there is. Her making it to the quarter finals in the Grand Festival in Sinnoh last year was a pretty big deal."
"Oh," May nodded in understanding. "Yeah it is really amazing. I never thought it was a possibility. I'm excited to see her in the contest, she has to be really talented." Drew nodded in agreement. They sat silently for a moment before May said happily, "So you won your contest in Azalea, huh?"
"Yeah," Drew said. This was May. A smile on her face as she acknowledged others' accomplishments even after she had suffered a loss.
"How was it?" she asked, then remembered suddenly, "Oh! Didn't you say Harley was there too? Did you have to battle him?" Drew hesitated for a moment. He wondered whether he should explain Scyther's whole situation or not. In the end, he decided it was fine to do so, now that he and Scyther had sorted out their issue and were now working very well together ever since Drew had made their team training challenges more frequent. It was inevitable anyway that he would tell May since he had planned to challenge her and Blaziken to a battle so Scyther could settle its issue with Blaziken once and for all. So, gathering his energy, Drew explained everything that happened at the contest, mainly about Scyther's behaviour and attitude, before he continued on to explain how they resolved the issue.
"Oh so Scyther just wanted to have a bit more fun while training?" May asked, surprised. Drew nodded. "That's actually not what I expected! To be honest Scyther didn't feel like the type."
"Yeah I sort of wasn't expecting it either but then I remembered you using that technique to get Scyther to take its medicine back in Goldenrod and I figured it might work again. So....thanks for that I guess." He gave a small smile. The type that made May's heart flutter. It wasn't often that he thanked her because she helped him in some way. Usually he was the one to help her. May grinned.
"I'm glad it worked!" After that, they ate in silence for a few minutes. Minutes in which Drew pondered how he should ask her about her contest indirectly. Finally he decided to say, "So how was Ecruteak?"
"Not bad," May smiled. "I had a blast with Luna and the others. The contest was also going great until the final battle." Her smile turned a bit disappointed. "I lost against Luna."
"Oh," Drew said, surprised.
"But the thing was, it was a bit of a strange battle. By the end the points were virtually the same but I felt like I was never able to land any good hits throughout. I don't know why." Drew was silent for a moment and then said, "Did you pick up on her battle style? Like what types of attacks or combinations she was using?"
