THE WORLD HAD BEEN CRUEL TO EUPHEMIA POTTER. It had orphaned her at three years old, when memories of her parents were still fresh in her brain, when all she knew about the world was that her parents loved her. Left to fend for herself and keep up her promises to her father, the world seems to be constantly launching attacks at Euphemia, and after years of pain, the skin around her heart hardens, and her heart becomes stony.

The night of Halloween 1981, the young child would learn the cruelties of the world— that no matter how hard her parents tried to shelter her from the darkness outside their little house in Godric's Hollow, the darkness would seep in through the cracks, until that night when darkness in human form came knocking at the Potter's residence.

Up until that evening, Euphemia had been bouncing up and down, clapping her chubby hands together in joy as she looked up at her father who was making smoke rings appear out of his wand. It hadn't been too long, James had paused his little entertainment act when to talk to Lily, who had come to grab Harry for a bath and to put him to bed, and so James let Euphemia clamber onto his lap, clutching her tiny fists around his shirt, as she leaned herself on his torso, and shoving a storybook in his face, demanding to be read too. James, of course, was more than happy to comply— it broke his heart that his daughter couldn't have a normal childhood; she should've been out with children her own age, trick or treating, but instead she had been confined to the walls of her home, with only her family for company. Sirius, Remus and Peter had been coming around, but their visits had steadily decreased over the past few months, especially after Harry's birth and the prophecy. Tensions were high between the Marauders, so much so that even Euphemia noticed— they never came around together anymore, and when they visited, they didn't stay for long, they came to convey news, speaking in hushed whispers that couldn't hide the bitterness of their notes, and left. It made James want to pull his hair out; he wanted his boys to get along the way they used to, back at Hogwarts, he wanted to take his daughter out, to live normally, but none of that was possible.

He recalls, craves the normalcy they used to have before the prophecy. Granted, the times spent with Lily, Euphemia and himself weren't exactly normal— they still faced the threat of a looming war, but they could still be free, take Euphemia to the zoo, or a cafe on a Sunday morning and sip they're coffees, and pretend for a few hours that they were just a normal family, who didn't have to worry about death every time they left their home. The first three years of parenthood had been difficult for both James and Lily, Lily having little contact with her parents due to her strained relationship with her sister, and James' parents passing away just a few months after Euphemia's birth.
