In my younger and more vulnerable years, my Uncle Henry gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since.
"Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you have."
He didn't say anything further, but I understood that he meant a great deal more. In consequence, I am inclined to reserve all judgements, a habit that has opened up many curious worlds and peoples to me.
Thusly, when my hot air balloon crashed onto the shore of East Egg in the summer of 1922, I became privy to another piece of good advice: at times it matters little what you have, and much who you know.
