There was a tense silence for the first part of the trip. Mannix couldn't tell if Eleanor was sad about potentially parting with him, or anxious about the upcoming battle.
It wasn't until that night when they were huddled around a campfire in the mouth of a cave, that the first sentence was spoken.
"How long until we reach the Capital city?" Eleanor asked, keeping her eyes locked on the burning embers.
"A one more day's walk, so you better rest up tonight, because we leave at first light of dawn." Mannix responded.
Eleanor knew he was trying to drop the conversation, but she wouldn't have it.
"Okay, are you going to tell me what's going on with you, or am I going to have to question you until you get ticked?" she asked.
Mannix glanced at Eleanor unfazed by the outburst. "Do you really want to get caught up in the nonsense know as my life?" he asked.
Eleanor raised her eyebrow, and hesitate to answer his question.
"Trust me, Eleanor. My life is not something you want to get tangled up, so it would be best for you to forget about me once w
"Well, maybe I don't want to forget you." Mannix looked up at her, when he heard the softly spoken sentence. Eleanor's eyes were still traced down at her legs, and a couple of loose hair strands had fallen over her face.
"Go to sleep." the plain-walker ordered not wanting the conversation to continue.
Eleanor silently obeyed, and laid down on the make-shift bed she made out of her bag, and the thin blanket that Mannix had allowed her to bring.
Minutes later, Eleanor was fast asleep, and Mannix turned his gaze from the glowing ashes of the fire to the darkened woods with a moon hanging above it outside the mouth of the cave.
Suddenly, a surge hit the plain-walker, and he clutched his chest. That's when he sensed the dark energy that lurked nearby.
Mannix looked up at the moonlit sky just as a thick, purple smoke went across.
The plain-walker immediately went for his blade-less hilt, but wasn't quick enough. The purple smoke shot at him, and hit him square in the head, knocking Mannix to the cave's floor.
Instantly, Mannix's body felt drained of it's power, and he could barely move any of his limbs. His eye-lids grew heavy as he extended his arm towards a still-sleeping Eleanor.
"The last thing he heard was foot-steps entering the cave, and a cold voice snickering, "Nighty night, plain-walker scum."
Upon hearing those words, Mannix's body gave in, and he went under, falling into a dark void, like the one that had brought him back to this world.
A/N: Wow, I am evil when it comes to these cliffhangers. Sorry for another short chapter, but the next one is a bit long. What's going to happen to Mannix and Eleanor? Is the final battle drawing near? Theories? Feedback is welcome always!!
