Raoul gasped as a candle burned through the top of the rope around his throat, and he fell to the floor, coughing. The Phantom pulled the loosened noose off of his neck, and grabbed him by the arm. Their eyes met.
The Phantom's eyes were dark brown, full of sorrow. Realization struck Raoul. This man was a victim of a hateful world. Cruelty was all he had known. Madame Giry's story about the boy in a cage echoed in his mind. Anger turned to pity.
The other man spoke, voice full of emotion.
"Promise me that you'll take good care of Christine. She deserves the world."
Raoul gave a half smile.
"I will."
The Phantom nodded, making an attempt at returning the expression.
"Thank you."
He sighed, before pulling Raoul up and releasing his arm.
"Go."
