Alex Rider Goes Back

Ch.3 New Instructor

Alex walked into the cabin that he had been in every time he had gone to Brecons and chose the bed closest to the only escape exit, aka the door but not in the sight of it or any windows, just in case something was to happen, he wouldn’t be in sight to anyone climbing through the window or walking through the door.

He analyzed all of the escape routes and noticed there was a loose board on the left side of the room. He walked over to it and pried it open. It was a little tunnel! He assumed one of K-unit’s current members had made it, and he decided to inspect it.

He climbed in and saw something embedded in the wall. It was a book, he inspected it further and realized that everything was written in code. He could make out the owner of the book which he recognized as a journal. It said ‘J’ meaning that it wasn’t one of the current members staying in that cabin.

He decided to take it with him and he hid it in a secret compartment that was hidden in his bag for gadgets and anything else he needed to keep hidden. He figured he would have time to decipher it later after he had been assessed.

He walked out of the cabin and started to walk to the rest of K-unit who were standing there with confused looks on their faces. He walked over and they looked at each other and started walking towards Alex. K-unit traveled to the Sargeants office to be briefed on what was going to happen. They walked in and stood at attention.

The Sargeant spoke “At ease soldiers” They all seemed to relax except for Cub, who no one could seem to figure out. “Cub will be assessed, shooting, hand to hand combat, and assault course should be what you will cover today. I expect you to be done by dinner time” The Sargeant spoke, addressing Cub “Yes sir”

“K-unit, there is a new instructor, I expect you to show respect towards him” The Sarge stated. “Yes sir” K-unit replied in unison. They started walking towards the shooting range while talking about what they thought the new instructor would be and look like when Eagle said “Wait I think the new guy that we saw is the new instructor!” Wolf then snorted which was a strange sight for Alex and said “Wow Eagle said something smart for the first time in his life” Everyone burst out laughing except for Alex and Eagle, who was pouting while Alex still had his Emotionless Mask on which no one could seem to crack.

They started heading towards the gun shed. Alex looked around, recognizing many of them, and not only because he had shot with them before but also because all of them had either been pointed at him or his friends.

He walked over to the Beretta 92FS Inox and rested it comfortably in his hand. K-unit were a little apprehensive of how he could hold a gun so comfortably, looking like it was a part of him and still keep his emotional wall up.

They walked over to the shooting range, well most of them walked, Eagle was prancing around awkwardly with his legs sticking out in every direction, whilst the rest of the unit traveled slowly behind the bird brain. 

They finally reached the shooting range and Alex started to strip and reassemble the gun after Eagle had gotten the timer ready. He finished and asked Eagle for his time but it seemed like he was frozen. Wolf went over and his eyes widened comically “Y-You beat the record that was set by our best soldier ever” Fox, and Snake immediately stumbled over to look at the timer “What time did I get?” Alex questioned “ 45 Seconds on the dot, Jaguar's record was A minute 13 seconds” Fox replied

“Shoot Shoot Shoot” Eagle started chanting. Alex lifted the Gun and shot immediately without pausing to aim. He shot four times and put the gun down after stripping it and cleaning it. In that time, Snake went and collected the targets.

Every single one of them had a hole clean in the middle. Meanwhile, the new instructor was watching from in a tree, thinking no one had seen him, but Alex had felt a presence from above the whole time that he had been there. He finally decided to look up and saw a shadow in the trees. He didn’t feel the hairs on the back of his neck stand up so he knew it was the new instructor watching.

He sent a small wave up in the direction of the shadow to let him know he had seen him and then focused on Snake, who was bringing the targets back. He showed them to the rest of the unit and they paled at how well he could shoot without aiming “How did you do that?” Eagle demanded “Classified” Alex replied robotically.

Eagle knew he wasn't going to get anything out of the teen so instead they moved on to hand-to-hand combat, where Alex took down all of his Unit and the instructor that was in charge of the activity. A crowd had gathered by now to watch the new guy being evaluated. The new instructor jumped down from the trees to try and surprise attack Alex but Alex had figured out his plan and simply took a step to the left to avoid getting hit.

Everyone was in awe of how he had known that someone would swing down from the trees and hit him and how he had avoided it by only taking a step to the side. Then the new instructor tried to fight Alex but was down on the mat in under a minute, which was the longest anyone had lasted; even when he had gone up against 20 fit soldiers.
