Four hours into the two-hour hike, you were sick of it. Not of the walking – you weren't tired at all. But of Leorio's complaining.
"The old woman said it was a two-hour hike, but it's getting dark! We've been at this for four hours, at least!"
"Jeez, another beast warning. Forget beasts! Where's the stupid exam hall?"
"I'm hungry! I have to go to the bathroom!"
"Here," you said, shoving an apple at him. "There are some bushes over there, if you need to relieve yourself."
"Oh... thanks," Leorio said, taking the apple. He blushed a little as he looked at the bushes. "I can... uh... I can hold it."
For a while, there was nothing but the sounds of Leorio chewing. You stretched out your awareness and frowned.
Didn't the old woman say there was only a couple living in the cabin...?
No, she said there was a couple. Meaning that there might not be only two people. Judging by the blood flow, they might not be entirely human, either.
You kept quiet, unable to explain how you could possibly sense something sixty meters away in a closed room.
"There it is," Kurapika said, pointing to the cabin.
The four of you approached it.
"It's so quiet," Kurapika said aloud. "Are we the only applicants to arrive?"
Leorio knocked on the front door. "Hello? Anyone h-"
The door creaked open, and Leorio cut himself off with a shocked gasp. You ducked around him and saw a magical beast holding a woman aloft in the wreckage of the cabin, another man trapped under some rubble.
Your senses, on the other hand, told a different story. Three magical beasts, a fourth just on the edge of your range. None of them were injured or afraid, their heartbeats telling a story of anticipation rather than fear.
You opened your mouth.
"A magical beast!" Leorio hissed, drawing his knife. Kurapika pulled out his wooden swords.
"Wai – "
The beast holding the woman-disguised-as-a-beast lunged past you. As it did, it pressed a finger to its lips. You caught its eye and sighed, nodding.
"We gotta save her!" Gon cried.
"Leorio, see to his injuries!" Kurapika yelled.
"I'm on it! Good luck!"
Gon and Kurapika raced out of the cabin, you following along after them.
"It ran into the forest," Kurapika panted, "but which way?"
Gon looked around. He narrowed his eyes. "That way! I see its shadow!"
He can see its shadow? In this darkness?
Watching Gon race after the beasts, jumping through the trees, you wondered if maybe you'd been a little quick in dismissing the world as 'quirkless.' Gon's speed, senses, and agility were superhuman. Maybe that meant -
"Let her go!" Gon yelled.
"Make me!" the beast yelled back.
Gon gasped audibly. "Didja hear that? It talked!"
Next to her, running along the ground, Kurapika scoffed. "Of course it talked! That's why they're called magical beasts!"
You blinked. You didn't know that.
