After finishing all of my duties for the morning, I headed straight to the dreaded filing room to finish what I had started yesterday.
He wasn't in yet. But, knowing Mr Knight, he would pop a fuse if he found me anywhere else than bunkered down in this stupid room. That's right, stupid, the lack of ventilation in here has finally caused permanent damage to the part of my brain responsible for forming better adjectives. Either that or it was the lack of air conditioning mixed with the stifling summer heat.
It was Friday and I was so not in the mood to be staying overtime for this ridiculous little "project" of Mr Knight. But at the rate I was going, I'm guessing that's exactly what was going to happen.
The rational part of me tried to argue that there was nothing ridiculous about this task that he had handed me. He was my boss after all and could request that I complete filing duties such as this without there being any ulterior motives behind it. But there was a nagging feeling at the back of my mind convincing me otherwise. It probably had something to do with what he had said yesterday about George.
The possibility that he only wanted to keep me away from George by loading all this work on me, irked me beyond belief. Not that I was necessarily interested in contacting George or anything. I was still in two minds about that. But who gave him the right to interfere in my personal life like that? Who died and made him my keeper?
"Knock knock,"
I looked up to see Ian leaning against the door frame with his arms crossed. His usual friendly smile was plastered on his face.
"Hi Ian, how are you doing?" I greeted with a smile.
"Good thanks and I see William still has you chained to the filing room." He stated, motioning towards the scattered files around me as he stepped further into the filing room.
"Oh yeah, I think he's enjoying this situation a whole lot more than necessary," I answered begrudgingly.
Ian chuckled.
"Jeez, I don't even want to know what game the two of you are playing,"
I glared at him and had a response locked and ready to go, but he continued talking.
"Besides, that's not why I'm here." He said, scratching the back of his neck.
"Oh, so you're not just here to tease me about my current predicament? Or to make ridiculous insinuations about me and my boss?" I asked, cocking an eyebrow at him.
Taking our somewhat unconventional past relationship into account, his insinuation wasn't all that ridiculous. But Ian didn't need to know that.
"Believe it or not, no. I'm actually here to talk to you about something else entirely." He looked around nervously.
What on earth could have this man so nervous? I thought corporate types were supposed to be cool calm and collected at all times. Or was that an incorrect assumption from spending too much time around Mr Knight?
If you ask me, it hasn't been nearly enough time.
Oh no, I don't have time for you right now!
"What's up Ian? You're making me nervous." I said, only now putting down the files and giving him my full attention.
I have been listening to him but was multitasking and packing files in the right order at the same time.
The poor man was practically squirming on the spot at this point.
"Well, you know Julie and I have become quite serious the last couple of months..." He trailed off.
