"Yes sir, what did you want to talk about?" I answered, trying my absolute best to keep my voice steady, despite his close proximity.
His gaze never left mine since he sauntered into the room.
He took a step forward and I took another away from him. One of the cabinet handles were now sticking into my back and it was official, there was nowhere that I could escape to. Unless I had acquired some parkour abilities overnight that I wasn't aware of, I was stuck between Mr Knight and the rows of cabinets.
"I want to discuss what happened last night."
The events from last night started replaying in my head, me sifting through the files, him jumping to conclusions, both of us leaving to go home.
"What would you like to discuss sir?" I asked, keeping my tone professional. But my body alluded to my defiant emotions as my arms crossed over my chest almost by their own accord.
His left eyebrow twitched.
He took another step closer, leaving no room to consider this encounter proper. I raised my chin to meet his eyes once more.
"Are you still seeing George?" he asked.
I was so taken aback by his question that I just stared at him for a while, trying to process what it was that he was asking me.
Was I still seeing George? What kind of ridiculous question was that? And when for that matter had I been seeing George to start with? At the most, there was a light flirtation on my side and nothing more. I cannot, however, account for the motivation behind his actions, although I assume it was much of the same thing.
"What on earth are you talking about? When was I seeing George?"
"Don't play dumb Elizabeth, you know what I'm talking about." His eyes were now burning into mine.
"No, I cannot say that I do. And what does it have to do with you anyway if I was seeing him?" I retorted.
This man's controlling nature was reaching new heights and it was seriously peeving me off. All this nonsense of keeping me busy, asking questions about my non-existent relationship with George and giving me crap about my personal life interfering with my work.
The crease between his eyebrows made an appearance and his body somehow came even closer to mine. As if my body needed any more reason to react to his presence, with every inhale our chests now brushed against each other, sending tingles all over my body.
"Will you continue seeing him?"
I met his challenge, my gaze unrelenting.
"I refuse to answer."
I was being stubborn, I knew this. But I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of relenting, even if there was in fact nothing going on between me and George. My stance remained, he had no business knowing any of that.
"Elizabeth..." He sounded exasperated then and he broke eye contact.
When his eyes met mine again, they were softer and the strong, armoured exterior that I was usually met with wasn't there anymore.
"Stop whatever involvement you have with him." It was an order, but his tone came out imploringly.
"Are you telling me to do this as my boss?" I whispered.
I could feel my own guard starting to slip.
He sighed, closing his eyes.
He seemed troubled by my question.
"No..." Came his reply, gruff and yet soft at the same time.
His hands reached up, cupping my face. His eyes were searching mine again.
I was caught off-guard by his affectionate gesture and did nothing to ward it off. Not that I think I would have either way. His touch felt familiar and safe, causing warmth to spread as his thumbs made small circular movements along my jaw.
"I'm asking you as William. I just... Please don't get involved with him."
His fingers didn't miss a beat, never seizing their torturous circles.
This is to blame for the hoarseness of my voice that followed moments later.
"I won't."
I didn't know exactly what else I was agreeing to when I agreed to keep away from George but the rational part of my brain was not present at current.
One thing was for certain, I didn't want William to stop. Not when his hand slipped from my cheek and slid down my side to rest at my waist. Not when his other hand reached to the back of my neck, reaching into my hair and his fingers curling into the strands. And definitely not when his soft lips reached my neck that was already anticipating his touch.
A breath escaped my lips that I wasn't aware I was holding as his lips brushed over my skin. My eyes closed as he made his way up to my jaw, leaving feathery kisses in his wake.
His kisses felt different than I had expected. His hands were sure, firm and unnerving in their pursuit. His lips, however, were soft and warm and left that same feeling of security that his embrace usually did. With each kiss, he was communicating emotions that he had not put into words: uncertainty, frustration, longing, tenderness, desire...
As his body came flush into mine, my heart rate picked up and warmth spread to entirely new territories.
"William..." My voice came out breathy.
I reached my hands up to his chest in an attempt to regain some control of the situation.
His kisses now came closer to my mouth as one landed on each side of my lips, yet never fully coming into contact with it.
"Hmm..." He responded, never missing a beat.
As if the universe sensed the conflict that was slowly rising within me as our intimacy grew, we were interrupted.
William's cellphone started buzzing in his pocket, stilling us both. William gave a frustrated sigh, as his forehead came to rest on mine. Our breathing came out in sync as we both tried to regain some form of composure.
After a few more seconds of buzzing, William raised his head enough to place a chaste kiss on my forehead, his lips lingering slightly before he retrieved the buzzing intruder.
"What?" He clipped, irritated.
I sure would hate to be on the other end of that line.
And I'm back to updating again.
I hope this chapter somewhat made up for me being MIA...and thank you so much for your patience and understanding, you guys have really been amazing! ❤
I would really like to hear what you guys think about this chapter. This is my first time writing an... Uhm... slightly more "intimate" scene. And I have some more ideas for similar scenes in the coming chapters.
Stay tuned, I will be updating again pretty soon.
Xx
