Chapter 1
I sat in the midst of all the chattering schoolgirls, alone and unseen. The passed in twos and threes, lost in their own little world of small talk. They were oblivious to my existence, same as everyone. I wondered if they were blind, stupid, or if I really was just invisible. I shrugged and returned to my book.I was reading To Kill a Mockingbird for the umpteenth time. I loved it because it showed people not to judge others by how they look. If only more people would read it, the message could be spread and I wouldn't feel like such a loner.
"Excuse me, I'm new here, so I don't really know my way around. Do you think you could take me to reception?"
I looked up from my book to see a young girl with raven black hair that fell to her slim waist. She had large, sparkling ble eyes like saphires. She was one of those pretty girls, the ones who would be snapped up by the popular crowd within a few minutes of entering the school premises. She looked at me expectantly and I remembered why I was actually talking to someone for a change in my usual silent routine.
"Um, yeah, sure." I stood up, hugging my tattered book to my chest and began to lead the new girl. May as well have a little conversation for the moment. It's not as if I'll be able to indulge in it again anytime soon. "What's your name?"
"It's Seraphina."
"Oh. That's pretty."
"Thanks. What's yours?"
"Aurora."
"That's a pretty name too."
"Um, thanks." She suddenly turned to me.
"It's been a long time since you've spoken to someone, hasn't it?"
"Sort of. How can you tell?"
"It's just the way you're speaking. It's kind of awkward, and forced. Why don't you talk to people much?"
"It's not that I don't talk to people, they just don't talk to me."
"Ok then, why don't they talk to you?"
I just shrugged. Her guess was as good as mine. She gave me a dis-satisfied look, but didn't push it. Then our brief conversation drew to an abrupt close when we arrived at the grand doors of the reception. My theory was that the school spent more on that door alone than it did on all the classrooms put together. It was hard to dispute when the classrooms flooded as often as they did.
"Here you are, I guess."
"Thanks. See you around."
"Yeah, you too."I said, a little flatly. She opened the expensive door and entered reception. I turned and walked the other way, back to the main school where I could hopefully finish my book without disturbance.

I was once again dwelling happily in the world of Atticus Finch when I was interrupted by a loud, inconsiderate ringing. Bell. That means classtime. Yippee. Please note sarcasm. I dragged myself of the soft green grass, returning to the cruel reality of my life at school. I headed to my locker in the common room. Grabbing my notepad and other stationary junk, I set out for class. I had a double english, so things really weren't looking up. The english teacher, Miss Maxwell was a sadistic bitch because she was 49 and unmarried. She gave mountains of homework, which I usually wouldn't care about, but she also flipped out and yelled at anyone who spoke while she did, or didn't copy everyting off the board correctly, or made a spelling error. She was basically a complete nutter.
I walked down a winding concrete path, lined with trees. Their leaves were a mix of rusty orange, yellow and lime green, as Autumn was fast approaching. I turned at the end of the path, stopping at the third classroom along. I opened the door, and tok a seat around the back, so I might go unnoticed. When you get a question wrong for Miss Maxwell, she would give you a detention and a trip to the doctor for burst eardrums.
One by one, the girls trailed in and took a seat. None of them sat in the front if they could avoid it. I didn't blame them. As per usual, I was ignored. No one seemed to realiseI was in the room until a girl bumped into my chair. Apologies were exchanged, and it was back to being ignored. I deliberately sat in the corner so I wouldn't be bothered, but it already seemed to have backfired. The seat next to me was taken quickly by Seraphina.
"Hi." she said.
"Hi." I replied. Even if she was nosy, I had to be polite.
"So are you going to tell me?" she asked.
"Tell you what?"
"Why you don't talk to people. I tried to find out about you from the other girls, but they didn't seem to realise who I was talking about. Are they blanking you?"
"No, no it's nothing like that."
"Then what is it?"
I paused. I suddenly wondered something. I voiced it. "Why are you talking to me? Why are you remembering me?"
"What do you mean? I'm talking to you because you're the only person I know. Friends, right?"
I sighed. This girl was weird. How is it she could remember me, but no one else could? And now I had to explain the awkward situation of not having a friend before. "Yeah, ok friends. But I have to be honest. I've never really had a friend before. And honestly, how are you remembering me? Are you just trying really hard?" I asked, truly confused. She laughed. I frowned. What was so funny?
"I have to say, it's really sad that you've never had a friend before, but it's ok. We are friends now, so it's no prob. And why are you so caught up on people remembering you?"
"Because people don't! You're the only person aside from my Nanna who has ever seemed to notice I exist!"
"Ummm... That's why people don't talk to you, huh?"
"Yeah." I sighed.
"Cheer up! You know what? How about you come over after school today? You're not busy, are you?"
"I'm sorry, I can't. I need to go to the library, then catch the bus home."
"Why do you need to go to the library?"
"I need to do my homework."
"Well you're can do that at my place, can't you?"
"Well yeah, I guess. But I need to catch the bus at 6 or I can't get home."
"It's ok! We can drop you off in time to catch the bus, and it'll be fun! What do you say?"
"Well... Ok."
"Great! It'll be awesome, don't worry!"
Just as I began to feel half-decent, Miss Maxwell walked in. That instantly killed my buzz. Oh well, better get the work done. My schedule was crammed enough without a weeks worth of detentions. I opened my books and buckled down.
