Chapter 4
"It all began millenia ago, when a powerful force circulated the Earth. It roamed the planet as a nomad, with no home or shelter, and nothing to live for. That was, until it discovered life. And it loved it. In the beginning, it simply observed humanity, watching them thrive. However, that was all changed one day when the mysterious entity trepassed into the centre of civilisation, and revealed itself to a small group of humans. The people it showed itself to became enraptured with it, and they separated from the rest of the world. With the force leading them, they were a wise and peaceful civilisation. They were known as the Luminiens.
The Luminiens soon began to alienate from the rest of humanity, growing stranger. The force taught them to be charitable, and fair. As they learnt, they began to explore parts of their being they never knew existed. It is true that humans only use a small percentage of their brainpower. The Luminiens began to go further, using parts of their brain no one had ever heard of before. Soon, the Luminiens discovered something truly amazing; potential for power. They learnt that although humans were born without magic, they had the potential to hold and cater it. You see, the Luminiens found out that the brain is split into two parts; a part that focuses on others and the environment around you, and a part that is self-absorbed, that contains all thought relating to yourself. The brain uses a small portion of both of these for the mundane, everyday life, leaving the rest free to store something magnificent. That magnificent something is magic.
Now that they had worked out that they could wield magic, they just needed to find it. And then they turned to their mysterious leader. They had already realised that the force was supernatural, so they asked it to assist and donate a small segment of its magic. It agreed, knowing that the Luminiens were strong enough and wise enough to resist the temptation that walked hand in hand with magic. Tranfusing the magic to the empty space dwelling deep inside them, they created the very first magical beings; witches. Through continued experimentation, other creatures soon followed, like fae, angels, demons, centaurs, cherubim, dragons, dryads, elementals, griffins, merfolk and unicorns, but witches and warlocks were the originals.
Along with creating witches and warlocks, the transfusion led to the discovery ofsomething truly incredible; the soul. The soul became the home to their new-found power, and to their deepest desires and spirit. It was rumoured that very powerful magical beings had the ability to project their soul in the form of a small crystal, that could heal and destroy. Of course, that was only a rumour, since there was no evidence to this, and no one has every been able to do it, even after years of practice and devotion. Anyway, that was how the first magical beings were created." finished Seraphina, slightly out of breath due the length of her tale. I paused for a moment, briefly entering the strange realm that was my mind to ponder over this.
According to Seraphina, the original magical beings were known as the Luminiens. Led by a mysterious force, they were a great and intelligent civilisation. One thing struck me odd, though. Throughout history, people always had names for their leaders, and the Luminiens seemed to be one of those races that would have definitely had some great name for their leader. It seemed strange for Seraphina not to mention a name of this force. What is she hiding? I had to find out. I decided to try the direct approach.
"Um, Seraphina, did the force have a name?"
"No! Why would it need a name?" she eclaimed, a little to quickly. Well that sealed it, she was definitely hiding something. Hmmm... time to try the sneakier method.
"Huh. I guess I just thought that a race as intelligent and fair as you made the Luminiens seem would at least have the respect to present their liberator with a title." I implied softly, the double meaning in my words evident. Seraphina's cheeks reddened, and her eyes flashed. She had clearly taken offense. Stage One complete.
