My name is Caitlin Jacobs and I am worthless. I am just trash that is thrown away without another thought. What would lead me to think this? Just take a look at my life. There is no sunshine or happiness. It’s almost like a dark cloud is constantly covering my head.

My Father is in jail or at least it think he still is and my twin brother, Jude, older sister Callie, and I are all in the foster system. The foster system is stupid and so far it has only made my life more difficult. My siblings and I would have been better off running away a long time ago.

My twin brother and I look similar, but I look like my older sister too. We all have brown hair and brown eyes though. I am twelve right now and Jude and I will turn thirteen in a little while. Callie promises she will get us cupcakes, but my foster Dad would probably trash them and then go after Callie.

He hits Callie a lot, but so far he hasn’t come after Jude or me. Callie always stops him. She doesn’t like to see us hurt, but I’m already broken. James, my foster Dad also makes me, Jude, and Callie do a lot of chores, but that’s not so bad. The bad parts are when we mess up and James starts hitting Callie.

She always says, “Close your eyes guys. Go to Jude’s room. I’ll be there in a second.”

But one time Callie wasn’t home. James made her go pick up food and wouldn’t let me and Jude go so she had to leave us. Jude was trying to reach the plates when one of them crashed to floor and shattered. James stormed in furious.

“I didn’t mean to. It was an accident!” He yelled

“You do this?” James pointed at Jude.

I interrupted before Jude could say anything, “No! I did. I broke the plate.”

He shot me a glance and started crossing to the room to come at me.

“Go, Jude! Go!”

“No, I’m staying!” James pushed me to the ground and was getting ready to begin the beating.

“Get away from her!” Callie ran through the door and started prying him off of me.

He kicked her stomach and she fell to the ground and James started running back to me. Callie picked up a bat and ran outside.

“Hey, where are you going? Get back here!” I heard glass shatter and James cussing at her.

Jude helped me get up and we ran outside where Callie was hitting James’s car.

“That’s it! I’m calling the police!” Callie dropped the bat and ran to me and Jude after James went to get the phone.

She grabbed my face and wiped off the tears, “Are you ok? Are you hurt?”

“I’ll be fine.”

“Jude, did he hit you?” She turned to my brother and he shook his head.

I heard the sirens coming to take my sister. They wouldn’t believe us if we told them what he was doing. It would be our word against his. I held my sister close and she picked me up. Jude and I were fairly small for being twelve. I was 4”5 while Jude was a few inches taller.

The police pulled up the house and I held on to Callie tighter. I wasn’t willing to let go. The police man tried to pry me off of her but failed. Then another one came and grabbed Callie while the other pulled me off and held me back.

“Callie!” I sobbed. They started putting her in handcuffs and I tried to get away from the cop but couldn’t. Callie sat in the back of the car while the police talked to James.

“I was watching a movie with these two and the girl didn’t want to watch it and then came out here and started beating the shit out of my car. She must be crazy. I’m just glad these two aren’t hurt.” He lied all of the time.

He didn’t even say our names. It was like we were all trash again. Now Callie was going to juvie and we would be on our own. He was going to be pissed tonight.

I was going to get hurt for what I was about to say, “Your lying. You’re a liar! She would never do that!”

“You’re as crazy as your sister aren’t you? Must rhyme in the family.” I hated him so much, “Get inside now.”

Police are stupid. They never ask us for our side of the story. They always focus on them. To them, foster children are always the ones at fault. We never do anything wrong. They do it to us.

Jude and I walked inside that night. I went to change in me and Callie’s room. But I couldn’t fall asleep. Not with knowing that Callie wasn’t right next to me promising everything would be alright. I guess that was a lie too. She probably only said that to protect us. I quickly sat up in my bed after hearing The Knock. The Knock was for when James would creep in my room and mess with Callie and I.

“Jude.” I sighed realizing it was just him.

“Yeah.” He walked in and sat on my bed.

“Can’t sleep?” He shook his head no.

“Caitlin?”

“Yes.”

“Why do people like hurting us?”

“I don’t know, Jude. But things will get better. We will leave here soon.” I guess that was my turn to protect him.
