❝︎I waited so long
For something sweet like this
It's where I belong
Beside you in blinding blissI'm living in a daydream
Nothing that could faze me now
I'm caught up in a daydream
Nothing that could wake me nowWhat more could a girl want
What more could a girl want❞
Dreaming became a sleep aid. Something to hush the pain and grief, rock them to bed until their eyes were heavy and their breathing was soft. Set them in their cribs and pray they stay away. Something to lift the heavy weight of the past, the present, the future. Something to let her body fall into the delicate grooves of the mattress, keeping her tears from slipping, and escaping once more. That's all it was, she promised with a kiss, but she knew better. It was a high like nothing else, a relief that couldn't compare. It was something she could spend the rest of her life chasing. The inky wet of her dreams wasn't spilling, it wasn't staining her insides, but instead it was blocking out her pain. They were beautiful and serene in a comforting way, they were shared scars.
But somehow they felt a bit too real.
It wasn't about sleeping anymore, but wanting to be buried. A wooden box of a bed. An earthy blanket. And his presence to keep her company. Her own way out. Permanent. Something so few things could promise. He was gone, but not forgotten. It seemed so much easier, so much more peaceful, than this heartbeat she carried around. When the house was still, when the dead have gone to sleep, grief nestles in the crevasse of her chest. A heartbeat to remind her that she was so awfully alive and he wasn't. A song she wish would end.
They morphed into something stranger.
With it came the daydreams. With it came the gift of seeing him everywhere she went. They were a comfort, a reassurance everything would be okay. They started to drive her crazy. A dream turned into a daydream. It wasn't just an object of passing interest anymore. They were a battle between the long pauses between her dreams and the thoughtful pluck and choice of reality.
She developed an urge to grasp on to them that never seemed to lull. And the string that tied them together would be what brought them together.
