I awoke from a somewhat small bed, surrounded by IVs and doctors. What's going on? The last thing I remember is my father hitting me and then...

"You're finally up." one of the doctors said, a clipboard in her hand.  A lady with a black vest and black hair was also there, a police badge sitting on the outside of her vest.

"Hey, I know this is a bit tough for you, but once you get out of the hospital, I'm going to question you. Alright?" she said, placing her soft hand on my back. I felt safe when she was there, so I nodded slowly.

With that, both of them walked off.

"So, he's for sure getting out of the hospital, right?" I asked the nurse beside me. "Yep. He should be all yours in a few hours."

Finally, I'd get my big break.

If you didn't already know, I'm a detective. Specifically part of the Child Abuse department. Although we do get a lot of calls, not many are that serious, nor do a lot land on my plate. But this, this case right here, is mine for the taking.

The subject's name is Ayanokouji Kiyotaka, he's 15, and is pretty ordinary besides his intelligence. He's extraordinary in academics, becoming one of the best in the country just in a month. Most of his test results have been average before, however. Which obviously leads to cheating suspicions. But right now, that's not the point.

Upon getting to the crime scene, I saw a house that seemed pretty normal until I walked into his room. Blood spattered on the wall, hand marks, a knife, and so on. The abuse part came in when we found his parents. His father was covered in blood, fleeing the scene, while the mom also had blood, and was trying to carry him in a body bag, off to a truck on the hillside. Luckily my officers helped out, and caught them both.

They're currently in custody, and I'm going to question them all. I may not care about him at all, but I'm gonna get to the bottom of this case. Mark my words.

***

Finally, after 5 hours, he came. I saw him slowly walk into the room, analyzing his surroundings. With a few more looks, he nervously sat down.

"Hello," I said to no response.

"You've been through a lot it seems," I continued. He looked up at me, and nodded.

"Would you like to tell me about it?" Ayanokouji sat upright in his chair, and asked:

"Where should I start?"

***

So right there, he told me everything. From the unreachable expectations they had, to the constant abuse he received because of that, and the fact that he almost got sold. Needless to say, I was very hungry for justice. He'd been through the worst, and the most any of these other cops would give him was a quick pass off. It was truly a shame.

But one part stuck out to me.

When I did go to college for psychology, there was always one thing my teacher said when it came to children.

"If you look a child in the eye, it'll tell the story of their whole life, even if they say otherwise. A child's eye never lies, despite their conscience being able to." So I stared. It showed the same thing as before, despair, sadness, all the bad stuff, but randomly, a glint of light would light up, along with a tiny dot of darkness in it.

I couldn't figure out what it meant, but it didn't matter. He was telling the truth.

"You can go," I said, standing up. "I promise, I'll win you this case." He looked me dead in the eye, that glint now larger.

Was I his glint? His light?

What have I, Hina, gotten into?
