I flip through my heavy Calc book frantically, scouring each page for the answer. Taking a wild stab at the notes on the board, I try to answer. "Ummm, well, if the circumference of a circle is using either the radius or the diameter, we can use The Pythagorean Theorem to determine the measure of the missing angle. So computing that, I get that the answer is approximately 4.54 units."
"Correct." says Mr. Lewell, surprised and visibly disappointed. He shouldn't be, though. I'm the smartest Year 12 I know. My parents are both high-ranked engineers of the latest transportation project, Hub, which, though it is SUPPOSED to be a top-secret project, will create faster migration between the large megacities. I have grown up an all A student: I didn't really know academic failure. I could master any test thrown my way.
Throughout the rest of my day, each of my AP teachers mentioned this mysterious test, describing it as "life-altering" and a "monumental event in our young lives." I tried to zone out, but their words held my attention. Naturally attentive and observant, I found myself hanging onto their every word. Mrs. Audbaghan described it best:
"With the formation of megacities, world peace leaders acknowledged the fact that this decision to combine the cities had limited the number of profitable jobs available, and the skills taught in most primary and higher learning schools were not sufficient enough to prepare students for these tedious jobs. They felt the need to create a harder test, one that really tested students' resolve and ability to problem solve. Thus, the Demonstration of Logistics in Knowledge and Ciphering test was created."
Though she leaves no doubt that this is the true origin of the test, I still question the details. But when I ask her, she tenses up, stiff as a board. Am I missing something here?
