my mother use to read
poetry to me
when i was little,

she told me soft words & pretty phrases were magic spells
to calm the raging storm inside of you.

she told me poems turned
my sloppy sadness
into clear water.

she taught me how to read
between the lines,
to tell how broken the ink pen was when it spilt its heart out onto
blank pages

&

she taught me how to make people into poems,

but she never taught me how
to breathe without
all those light letters which made my hand shake so much
i could never
finish,

she never taught me how to look at another line of meaningless words
while her heart monitor
slowed to a stop like the end of her last bed of words she
never
finished.

&

she
never
taught me how
to love
poetry
as much as i loved her.
