None of this art in this book is mine! I forgot to say that earlier, sorry.
~Percy~
I wanted nothing to do with another hero thing. I was especially not going to work with those mortals who thought they were heroes. See, there's two things I despise about 'heroic people' that mortals are aware of.
1.) They're always adults just trying to make a name for themselves, taking all the credit. And then they have the audacity to treat us demigods poorly because we're teens, so 'what do we know?' even though we've fought more battles than them.
2.) They're mortals. Fragile, silly, blind- unless they are clear sighted and can see through the mist- and self absorbed. Now I'm not against all of them like some are. Just those who considered themselves heroes who should be worshiped.
And that group that called themselves the Avengers? They were both. Adults and mortals. Double whammy in my book.
So, I walked home. It was getting close to lunch time, and Mom and Paul would start getting worried.
But again, I noticed myself being followed. Growling softly to myself in irritation, I turned a corner, facing the way I'd come and waited for my stalker to come following. This time it was a guy, less professional acting that Natasha. At least she'd tried to blend in.
I marched up to the guy. "Listen, I've already told you. I'm not joining your stupid group."
The guy frowned. "You have said nothing of the sort to me, Perseus."
Oooookaaay. This guy seemed different from all the others. The Avengers agents were way better than this guy. He had a mortal aura, so I didn't have to worry about a monster. But this guy... something about him ticked my danger instincts big time.
"So. Who're you working for then?" I asked.
The guy gave me a look. "A science division that has taken a rather keen interest in you, Perseus Jackson. We'd like to recruit you to our cause."
I shifted a little. So the Avengers weren't the only people following me. I carefully kept my voice casual. "What is that? Your cause, I mean."
"Why, save the world from itself, of course," he said, spreading his arms wide. I took that moment to kick him in the guy parts and run. This time I kept to busy streets, packed with people. The guy hadn't sounded like he was from around here, and I used that to my advantage. I easily lost him.
Travelers quickly got out of my way as I sprinted down the street, seemingly for my life. And honestly, for all I knew, it was on the line. So I ran like it was.
I eventually made it home, to the one sight that was to terrifying to even make it into my nightmares.
I first knew something was up when the door to the apartment was unlocked and open a crack.
I entered warily, fist closed tight around Riptide. The entire main room was trashed, tables on their sides, lamps broken. My papers from last year for school that had still been on the table were ripped and thrown all over the room.
The worst thing, though, was Paul's riffle, that he'd 'forgotten' to return after the second Titan war, was sitting on the floor. He never got that thing out. Ever.
"Mom!" I yelled, panic and adrenaline flooding my system instantly. "Paul!"
I raced to their room and saw an even worse picture. My parents were in piles on the floor. Written on the wall behind them, in their own blood, were the words HAIL HYDRA.
I screamed again, a scream of anguish and fury as I fell to my knees before their bodies.
(Remember in the description I said I wouldn't kill them...? I changed my mind. Sorry, but he needed motivation.)
I stood and numbly walked to my room, finding two golden Drachma, and went back to their room, placing a coin in each of their hands so they could find passage to the land of the dead.
Then I began to cry. I didn't leave their side all day or night. It had probably been at least twelve hours since I'd came home, I didn't care. I didn't want to leave them.
But then the police came, and I was forced away, though gently. As the sight of them laying motionless on the ground seared itself into my brain, cold red fury overtook me. I marched away, not even sure where I was going until I was at the Avengers Tower.
~Bruce~
Someone nearly kicked the medical room's door off its hinges. The hooded figure stalked into the room and straight up to me.
I was met by the eyes of Percy Jackson. His eyes were puffy and red, his face tear stained. But his expression was down right murderous.
"Get the team," He ordered. I was so shocked, I didn't move for a second. Then I scrambled to get the team.
When the four walked in, Tony had his arms out. "Rethought our offer?" he asked, then stopped when he was Percy's face.
"What do you know of Hydra?" He demanded. His icy voice spread shivers up our spines.
Steve did a double take. "Hydra? How do you-" He stopped as Percy marched up to him.
"What. Do. You. Know." He hissed.
"Percy, calm down. What happened?" Natasha looked like she didn't know if she wanted to blast the boy, give him a hug and a juice box, or both.
Percy's shoulders slumped and another wave of tears overwhelmed him. He stumbled and sat right there on the floor. His broken-hearted, gut wrenching cries washed over us as effectively as the wave he'd summoned yesterday, which we'd only realized after he'd left that we'd forgotten to ask about.
"Percy?" Natasha asked again, stepping forward hesitantly, remebering how scared he'd been last time she'd appreached too fast. He buried his face in his hands and began to sob.
"They're- I can't believe they're gone-" He choked out.
"Who?" Tony asked, his voice nowhere as gentle as Natasha's.
"My- my mom. Paul." I guessed he meant Paul Blofis, his Step-dad.
"Hydra killed them?" Steve guessed. Percy nodded, still hiding his face in the sleeves of his hoodie.
"When?" Tony questioned.
"Ye-yesterday. This guy came up to me, and I was l-like, Nope! When I got ho-home. The place was a mess-" He trailed off, sitting up and wiping his eyes with the heel of his hand. We all exchanged a glance over his head. The others had mixed expressions, fury, pain, understanding, pity.
"Hydra is a group that had been bubbling under the surface for seventy years. I had thought they had been defeated!" Steve ranted to himself under his breath.
(By the way, This is right after the first Avengers, so nothing else real big had really happened. I think I forgot to mention that earlier.)
Percy looked up, his eyes so full of sadness it was like a fist to the stomach. "Tell me," He whispered.
So we did.
