(Narrator's POV)
*The Next Night...*
"How do I look? Think your Aunt and Uncle will like it?" Steven asked as he was at Connie's house getting ready. Truth be told, things had gotten awkward between him and his family ever since he let out how he truly felt yesterday. But Connie assured him that it was needed for a long time. And besides, it was long past time he stop letting the Gems be the major factor in how he feels. And yesterday proved that they no longer have the impact on his decisions and life that they once did.
Yesterday proved Steven had truly grown into his own, for better or worse. What he did from this point on was completely up to him and he wouldn't have it any other way.
But that was then and this was now. It was finally time to meet Connie's Aunt and Uncle. And while Steven was confident yesterday, he was nervous as could be tonight! One wrong word and he could lose Connie. So he had to tread carefully.
"Just be the Steven I fell in love with. Show them why I love you so much and why I chose you over any other snob of a guy they would have preferred for me. My Aunt and Uncle are upper class types but they can be swayed with the right words. Just be calm and sweet, alright?" Connie said as she kissed Steven on the cheek as Priyanka came in the room.
"You two ready? They're here." She said as Steven took a deep breath and followed Connie and Priyanka downstairs to where Connie's Uncle Amir and Aunt Dhani were waiting.
"So. You must be Steven. A pleasure to meet at last. Do forgive us for the delay. We truly have wanted to meet you. But shall we talk over Dinner?" Amir said as Steven nodded and they all headed outside where Steven pulled Connie's chair out for her and allowed her to sit down before doing the same for Priyanka.
"Why thank you, Steven." Priyanka said as Connie smiled. So far so good.
"Hmm. A gentleman you are but I feel as if there's more to you. And I'd like to know about it. But enough: Priyanka, let's see if you've learned from our dear mother in the fine art of culinary cuisine." Dhani said as they all ate. Steven used his table manners to the best of his abilities, doing his best to not eat fast and keeping his elbows off the table. Thankfully, Connie was there next to him to nudge if he slipped up.
"So then: Tell us a bit about yourself, Steven. I hear you're into music. What genres do you enjoy?" Amir asked.
"Well. I grew up with classic and alternative rock but I've gotten more into Ska as I've grown older. Something about that vibe always gets me in a good mood whenever I'm down. Plus it's just enjoyable to listen to." Steven explained.
"Ah. Altering tastes as you age. Interesting. I do hope you don't have the same mindest when it comes to women? That is to say, I hope you don't plan on discarding our niece." Dhani said as Steven shook his head.
"No Ma'am. Of course not. I'm not that type of person. Never have been and never will be." He said as Amir chuckled.
"Well let's find out what type of person you are. I'd like to ask you a more personal question based on what I've learned about you: Is it true that you're only half human? And you have an alien heritage?" He asked and just as Steven was about to answer..
"No. That's enough! No! I won't let you do this to Steven! I know what you are trying to do!" Connie snapped as Steven gently held her arm.
"No. Connie, calm down. I'll be honest with them." He said.
"Yes. It's true. I am half Gem. My mother..well it's a long story. But I want you to know that I love Connie. She accepted me knowing all of this and has accepted me for years. And I love her for it and for everything she is to me." Steven said as Amir and Dhani looked at each other before looking at Priyanka and nodding.
"Well then. I suppose there's only one thing to ask you then, Steven: You will invite us to the wedding in a few years, won't.you?" Amir asked as he, Dhani and Priyanka laughed.
"What? What's so funny?" Connie asked as Priyanka smiled.
"Your Aunt and Uncle were never going to stop your tuition nor did they want you to break up with Steven. Truth is, I said nothing but good things about him and what he's done for you and so many other people that they had to meet him for themselves." She explained.
"We apologize for the ruse. But we had heard you were always busy so we had to find a way so you had to meet us. A bit extreme but it just shows how much we wanted to meet you, Steven." Dhani explained.
"And we are happy to say that we like what we heard and what we see now. So you and Connie have our full support." Amir said as Steven and Connie smiled, the latter planting a kiss on her boyfriend's cheek.
It was nice to know their love for each other would never change.
