Getting away from Eirith had been what I had needed

Getting away from Eirith had been what I had needed. In many ways I couldn't understand why Magnus had allowed him to remain in his position. Eirith had abused his power for years, using it to obtain human prisoners from Nathgar in Ustgard to be sold to practitioners and used in heinous experiments in Misonte. Such practices were forbidden in Krak and Eyrin, still Eirith had found his ways around it.

But Eirith wasn't as invincible as he thought.

When I reached my guest chamber for the night, I stopped at the door, sensing eyes on me. Looking back the way I had come, I spotted August having followed me. A deep sigh ached to leave me, but I held it as he approached.

"Are you alright? You seemed kind of upset back there," he stated as he reached out, attempting to place a hand on my arm before I pulled away.

"I told you to stay away from Lord Eirith," I growled, ignoring the frown that settled onto his lips at my sharp words. "It was a simple, single command and you couldn't follow it."

"I didn't mean to—"

"It doesn't matter if you did or didn't," I interrupted bluntly.

He hushed but with a huff of annoyance. He appeared to like to throw his attitude at me every now and then, didn't he? It wouldn't work on me, not even if he broke into tears.

"You can't just walk all over me," he said seriously with his hands on his hips. I shook my head to myself. If only he could see what he looked like. It reminded me of my sister Lissa when she had used to scold me.

However, in this case he was in the wrong.

"Learning to follow directions will make a difference between you living or dying. It's not a matter of ruling over someone." I turned away, intent on resting in my room as I could feel I was worn out from having been in disguise all day.

But something made me believe I wasn't going to get any rest.

"How about a truce?" he asked suddenly, making me pause in the opening of the door. I glanced to him as he came closer then nodded towards my guest chamber. "I tell you all about me after you explain some shit to me. Maybe then I will understand why I have to listen to you."

"Fine," I grumbled, seeing I wasn't going to get any sleep anyway.

Then I turned the knob and pushed the door open. I waved him in first before I walked after him, shutting the door behind us. A fire roared to life in the hearth, lighting the room in golden rays and heat that melted through my body. I wanted to peel my cloak off, be done with my disguise for the day, yet I couldn't, not with him around. We'd only known each other two days.

He paced over to the hearth and plunked down in one of the chairs. I slowly followed and took the chair across from his, withholding a grunt when I lowered into the chair. He cracked his knuckles and then leaned forward with his elbows braced on the armrests.
