(OUR WORLD, PRESENT DAY)—

"It's a downpour out there, August," Candance stated, pointing her thumb towards the window. She leaned up against the windowsill and folded her arms across her chest, looking dead serious. "You sure you can manage driving home in that?"

"I think I can," he said as he peeked through the blinds. "Besides, it's not that bad."

The lights in the bar flickered before a crash sounded outside. August wrung the back of his neck then giggled. Candance rolled her eyes.

"Yeah right, you're liable to become a nice roasted chicken." She shoved off the windowsill and turned to August. "Why not wait it out with me and Stevie?"

"And be tortured by your flirting? I think I'll pass," he replied, patting her on the shoulder.

August worked at the bar regularly that Stevie and Candance owned. The Red Viper was a local hotspot for the town.

August had grown up in Everton. In August's town everybody knew everybody and if one person did one thing, everyone would know about it before midnight. Nothing was a secret. August had witnessed pain first-hand and the result of others actions and the unkindness that came from society. He learned to be as still as a deer, as if he had been caught in headlights all his life.

Now, he was an adult and on his own. His parents were gone and he was alone. He had bills to pay and shit to do. Stevie and Candance hired him to work full-time at their bar and for a decent wage too. Cut off limits were used for frequent customers. August knew that rule like the back of his hand.

Rarely, did he complain about his job, except for when the times that Candance and Stevie would flirt around him. He would laugh it off, but deep down, it hurt. It was almost as if they were rubbing in his face that he couldn't hold down a relationship. In truth, he knew they loved one another and watching that love hurt.

"You know Candance, she just worries about you a lot," Stevie muttered.

August propped his arms on the bar and leaned against it. "What's there to worry about?"

She shrugged then pointed at his eyes. "Maybe because your eyesight is trash. You need glasses. I've told you for years."

"Glasses cost money." He groaned, facing the door. Lightning flashed, then thunder rumbled. It was a thunderstorm, and he had driven in plenty of them before. It was only his car he was worried about.

Candance hovered by the windows, checking out them every now and then. She put her hands on her hips and looked ready to protest him. August blew her off and swung his leather jacket on. He dared her to fight him, with a quirk of his eyebrow. She huffed, making him laugh. He patted his pockets, double checking his keys, wallet, and phone were there before he began his march to the door.
