Something Missing

"Funny huh?" Started Adrien, who was now drenched head to toe with pouring rain, a small smile on his face. "The day started with a promising sunshine, and now it's raining cats and dogs."

Marinette nodded, sighing while looking out into the never ending thunderstorm. "Yeah."

There was something so very familiar about this scene. The rain, the rapid heartbeat, and shyness present in both their voices. But there was just one thing that was missing. It was the same scenario. The same feeling. The same weather. The same people. The same two lone voices. Déjà vu seemed to strike them repeatedly.

Adrien was to wait for his bodyguard to arrive half an hour late, because of some unknown and never-to-be-known delay, and Marinette, being the kind soul she was, offered to stay with him. Although Adrien thought it was harmful for her and tried to oppose her decision as much as he could without giving in to her adorable pout, she secretly thought that it was a wonderful opportunity to be with Adrien. Alone.

"You should get going Marinette. I don't want you drenched. You'll catch a cold." He spoke, his voice full of concern.

Marinette shot a playful glare his way and turning her head in a way so she avoided his face, but Adrien whole-heartedly thinking that it was cute, she snorted, "And you? You're immune to getting a cold? I'm not even wet."

Adrien suddenly felt heat rising to his cheeks in humiliation and something else indescribable, and rubbed the back of his neck, "I... Uh..." A gentle slap on his arm made him look at his blue-haired friend again, and when he saw the humorous twinkle conspicuously shining in her eye, he laughed along with her. "Okay, I accept defeat."

Their laughs were a sweet melody to each other's ears, hearts beating slightly faster than normal and the sound of rain now seemimg non-existent. But soon enough, their giggles were drowned out by a loud clap of thunder just after a bright flash in the dark sky, followed by great drops water.

Adrien unknowingly grasped Marinette's arm, eyes shut, lips quivering with fear and hid behind her, like as if the storm was an enemy. He looked terrible, and definitely sorrowful. Like something else- rather some one else was missing. A very very low whisper came from behind her, so that the only reason she was able to hear it was because of the fact that Adrien's head rested right behind her shoulder, that sounded something like, "Mother...."

Marinette gasped, a sad realisation hitting her. He was talking about Emilie Agreste. He was never in a storm without his mother. That care, that love and affection, that speciality, that friendliness and comfort, that motherly behaviour was missing from Adrien's family. And Adrien tried to cover up his loss, but he couldn't completely shut out his sorrow. As much as he tried not to let his inner loneliness show, he couldn't completely seal it. He needed a mother. Everyone did. But he was helpless.

Marinette slowly hugged the blond, letting him rest his head on her shoulder, and silent tears rolled down his cheeks. After a moment, he muttered, "Sorry..."

Marinette flashed a bright smile at him, immediately lifting his spirits, and reaching up, patted his head and spoke gently, "It's alright. I know you're missing your mother. But really, don't worry. I know I'm probably nowhere near a mother, but I know how to take care of kids. As in, you're not a kid, but a child. I mean, a teen. Close to an adult, but I can still be there for you. Goodness! I can't even understand what I'm saying-"

A chuckle stopped her, causing her to look up at a smiling Adrien, "You know, you're really funny."

Marinette shrugged and turned away, so that Adrien couldn't see the pink color blooming in her cheeks.

A screeching sound made the two to look away from each other, and on the sleek silvery-black car that just arrived, signalling that Adrien had to leave.

Marinette unconsciously rubbed her pink bag, before waving at Adrien. A slight poke, brought attention to the bag. When Adrien saw that she was rummaging through her bag, he put on a quizzical look. "Hmm?"

Marinette produced a familiar black umbrella, an unsure smile on her face, before she giggled, "Well, I think I had this with me all this while."

Adrien seemed like he would explode any minute, and if it wasn't for the rain, a distant yell could be heard, "MARINETTE!!!!!!!!!"
