"Why can't you be like all your peers? I only gave you a life to live and a hope to fulfill, you can't even do a simple task, Maylee."
~~~~~
My name is Maylee, Maylee Stevenson. At least that's what it says on my birth certificate. Or otherwise known as, May Stevenson. All of my friends make fun of me in private school for being a goody-two-shoes, but they don't know anything about me. I am nothing even close to a goody-two-shoes. I do what I'm told, and I let my name be spoken.
I let my life play out as it is and don't do anything about it.
Until I got my letter.
"Carmen come on! You don't need that long to use the bathroom!" I yelled to my 10-year-old sister from outside the upstairs bathroom door. I heard her laughing at me while she straightened her hair.
"I'm not done, you don't want to walk in seeing me naked do you?" She mocked.
My eyebrows furrowed and I closed my eyes to try to calm myself down. All of a sudden, the door swings open and slams at the wall. I open my eyes and see my sister across the bathroom, still straightening her hair, looking at me in disbelief.
"Did you just open the door?" I ask calmly, trying to comprehend what just happened. She shakes her head and unplugs the straightener, staring at me with wide eyes and quietly walking out the door.
My hands shook, still in shock as I grabbed my toothbrush, and started to brush my teeth. I had to get over it. I couldn't dwell on it, it was probably just a waste of time.
Once I finished in the bathroom, I grabbed my things for the gym with my friends and walked down the stairs. I was greeted with my mom's angry stare once I reached the kitchen.
"What did you do to your sister? She looks insane!" My mom yelled at me immediately. I flinched as she walked forward and her facial expression changed.
"Mom I don't know! It just happened, and I didn't know what was going on... I didn't mean to!" My voice started to shake and my mom caught the hint, bringing me into a hug.
"Ow!" My younger sister yelled while she sat at the dinner table. A piece of parchment hit the back of her head, she held it gently and furrowed her eyebrows at it before bringing it over to me.
"A letter... coming from the window? Please tell me I wasn't the only one that doesn't understand that." I said as I turned it over.
It was closed with a gorgeous piece of wax. Red, with what looked like the shape of a shield separated into four parts. All with a small animal inside.
"What the hell does Snape mean? Why does it say Snape instead of Stevenson?" I looked over at my mother. She looked down at the hardwood floor in slight shame.
"Mom?" I asked.
"Maylee, just open the letter please." She spoke quietly.
I did what she said, and opened the letter quietly. My mother was acting so strange.
"You have been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry," I spoke softly and looked up at my mother. She looked disgusted.
"Do you want to go?" She looked down at the ground, hoping I would say no. "You're a witch. You have magic powers."
I'm sorry, what?
"Where is it?" I ask, looking back down at the phrasing of the letter.
"Well, it's in the UK, around the London area." She paused and choked on her words. "You'd move to London with your father, so you would be able to go. You would be able to come back during the summer and winter break if you choose to do so."
"Sorry, go back, I know I heard that right. My DAD?! You told me he died soon after I was born..." I said with tears starting to form.
"So are you going or not?" She asked, ignoring the question.
"Hell yeah, I'm going," I said angrily.
I stomped up the stairs back into my bedroom and began packing my things.
