I heard footsteps coming up the stairs so I put my family pictures under a book that I had laid out on my bed.
"Hey, Maylee." My little sister spoke, coming into my room. I replied with hello, and she sat down on my bed next to me. "So are you moving to London?"
"Yeah," I said hesitantly, not wanting to leave my little sister, she had been my priority while being home. "I can't believe mom would lie to us like that." I shed a tear and took out the photos from before. Every time I looked at one, I could only see how it was missing my father next to all of us. All the missed opportunities for photos.
I had picked one up, admiring it.
"I remember that day. It was so much fun." Carmen, my little sister, pointed to the picture in my hand. It was when we went bike riding and found an ice cream shop. The owner let us go in the back and play with the dogs he owned. They ate my vanilla ice cream like it was air, me and Carmen laughed like Hyenas.
That day ended up being one of my favorite memories.
"I wonder why it took mom so long to tell us about dad."
She nodded her head and smiled.
"Does that mean that he's rich? Or magical like you? I mean, he lives in London!" We both laughed at her stupid comment and ended in a sad state of realization.
"So I guess I'll see you during winter break?" Carmen says quietly. I nodded and she smiled at my saddened face. "I'll go with you to the airport."
She got up to leave my room, and I dreaded going, even though I was going to London. It didn't matter, I didn't want to leave my little sister with my stressful, single mother. I keep her sane, I help out with the laundry, the dinner, cleaning the house... I hope she will be alright without me.
I closed my luggage, filled with clothes I probably won't need, books I will definitely read, and some random stuff I didn't know what to do with.
I needed to tell Carmen how to tell mom out, I didn't want to make mom think she had to do everything on her own. So, I wrote her a small letter of the things that might be a good idea to help with around the house.
I finished writing the letter and I put it on her bed. The sun was shining outside, and I looked at my bag that had recently been finished packing. Changing out of my pajamas and into some normal clothes, I looked out the window at the houses I had looked at my whole life.
I was excited to start something new, but I didn't want to leave the old place either. I mean, It's not like I would never see this place again. I'll be coming home for breaks and stuff.
"You ready to go?" My mom asked as she stood in my doorway. I nodded before we walked downstairs to the car. It felt like forever after we pulled out of the driveway, I shed a couple of tears while I thought about everything that has happened in the past 24 hours, and watched as the place I've lived my whole life passed away like lightning while the salt drips down my face.
I didn't want to leave, even though I know that this letter will forever change my life. For the better or the worse? We'll find out eventually.
My thoughts were interrupted by the car door closing. My sister had gotten out of the car and my mom turned around towards me.
"You going to be okay on your own?" She said to me with meaning pouring out of her throat onto the car seat leather.
I looked down and smiled.
"I'll be with dad. Even though I don't know him that well. The real question is, will you?" I said sarcastically, with hidden truths.
"I will try my best. I promise." She lets a tear fall down her cheek, and I bring my thumb towards her olive skin to brush it off. "Let's go beat this hun." She squeezed my hand and we both got out of the car.
The airport made me feel small, like an ant. I felt like I was being swallowed by how massive the white building seemed to be.
"You got this Maylee." Carmen tapped my shoulders sweetly as we began walking towards the big white structure.
The automatic doors swung open and we walked into the gigantic area. Everyone looked stressed and rushed as they walked quickly through the airport.
Tears started to well up into my eyes as my hands started to shake. I was eager to meet my dad that I hadn't known existed until about 12 hours ago, but I didn't want to leave my precious family behind me.
"You'll be okay," Carmen whispers into my ear while mom checks me in with the flight attendant.
Mom came back soon afterward and told me it was time to go on the plane so I could reach my seat without complications.
"Your father will be waiting for you at the airport once you get off the plane." She smiled gleefully while she gripped my hand. I could tell she was excited for me.
We all had said our goodbyes with many tears shed, even from Carmen, which never happens.
As I walked on the way to the plane, I turned around to see my mom holding Carmen in her arms. She was losing her big sister, and I was losing mine.
Tears swallowed my eyes as I entered the plane.
