A/N: A lot of this chapter is more "filler" and builds more of a relationship between the two. If you don't care ig scroll to the end?

"Hello?" I whisper into the phone.

"Hey, I'm sorry, did I wake you?" Dio's voice is husky as if he has been asleep before calling.

"No, I just kinda woke up." I lie shakily, speaking in a low volume.

"Ah, I see. I had a strange dream and woke up from that. Anyways since I'm now up and thinking about you, I wanted to check on you. I tried texting, but I don't think it went through for a while." The professor informs.

If my anxiety is correct, he wouldn't be going out of his way to ask me how I was. At least not multiple times.

"Oh, I didn't even look; sorry about that. I've been very stressed out with life. And I think getting nervous and not being used to anything like romance just sent my brain off the deep end. Please do not think you did anything wrong. It's all me, as cliche as that sounds."

An audible inhale is made on the other line. "I guessed that was the case. Or that you didn't trust me yet, and I was pushing it. Whichever one it truly is, I want you to be able to trust when I say that I won't push anything on you- except maybe taking my class." I can almost hear his wink and smile which somehow makes my skepticism fade into reassurance.

"Thank you, Dio. If only you were a medical doctor, I could have a reason to take it."

I genuinely appreciate how kind he is to me.

"I love how you say my name." He whispers taking me by surprise. But before I could respond, he says: "Anyways, why do you want to be a nurse instead of maybe a vet? I remember you told me about your work a bit on the train."

He remembers everything, huh? Meanwhile I can't even remember what I had for lunch today!

"I don't think I could take on all the responsibilities of a vet, at least without the guilt weighing on me."

"Guilt?"

I sigh, "having to put a dog down isn't something I think I can do. I can solve issues and everything like a vet can, but putting down animals is a big part of the job and a nonnegotiable one at that."

"I see. Do you like working with people better?"

"Yes and no. For one, the animals are a lot cuter-" His chuckle left my stomach in butterflies, it's so beautiful. Something warm fills my heart and my cheeks rise making a smile on my face.

"H-however, they can be a lot and people have more...I guess common sense? They will want to make it easier to get things done- at least in theory."

"I was about to say 'in theory' and you stole it from me!" He huffs out.

"I'm so sorry." I let my words draw out to add more of a sarcastic tone to an already fake apology.

"You're so mean." He pouts.

"I know, I'm terrible! How could I possibly make it up to you?"

"Take my class."

"No, I can't fit it in my schedule!"

"...Rude." He whines.

"Again, I'm aware." I roll my eyes.

"Fine, no taking my class. How about...actually I would have to think about this."

"Are you drawing out this little conversation to keep me up?" I roll my eyes again already knowing the answer.

"No, of course not! I really do need to think about this. It's very important I get justice for this."

I let out a laugh. "Do you ever take yourself seriously?"

"Only in professional settings."

"Mmhm...Could I ask a question?"

"That is a question, darling." I see his smirk as clear as day.

"Give me that attitude again and I will hang up."

"No you won't. But what was your question?"

I ignore his denial. "What made you want to be a lawyer?"

"Well, that's an easy one to answer. To be frank, it looked cool, when I was a kid, and it pays well. Which I know is not conventional for people like us to say, we have to say 'I just love working for the people', but that's the truth. I was also a very poor kid so it all worked out."

"So you were a lawyer then turned professor?"

"That's correct. I didn't like some parts of the job so I thought maybe teaching would be a better fit, which it is."

"How long were you a lawyer?"

Ok, at first, I thought it was bullshit, but Jesse might have something with the vampire theory.

"About three years. During that time, I would go to school. Now I just finished my Doctorate. So if this is about my age, I'm not as old as you think I am. I don't want to sound like I'm bragging, but I got my PhD in two years."

My jaw drops as I blurt out, "you're lying!"

"Nope. It was very hard though. I would recommend taking your time."

"Wow...that is incredible, you're still an old man but I give your props." I tease as a dramatic gasp leaves the other line.

"How dare you?! I'm 31, I'm not even close to being an old man, thank you very much." I can see him crossing his arms as I giggle.

"You're 9 years older than me- that's old!"

"No, you're just younger than me."

"Like that has any weight to it!" I retort.

"Age doesn't matter when we are arguing like children."

"Hmph! You started it..."

. . .

Let's just say, after hours of talking on the phone, we were interrupted again. A knock lands on my front door...it's 7 in the morning! "Hey, someone just knocked on the door, I gotta call you back."

"Alright just call me back when you get a chance."

"Will do." We both hang up as I rush to the door. I unlock the door, "hello?"

"Hello, I'm Detective Spencer and this is Detective Greene from Yorknew PD. May we come in?"
