As thin layers of light swam through my open curtains and flecked into my eyes, a groan left my groggy lips. Then I felt it, the increasing pressure building up inside. I needed to pee, and I needed to do it soon. Before I knew it my legs had sprung from underneath the layers of blankets on top of me, and onto the very cold tiled floor. Unfortunately for me I didn’t have my own bathroom and thus had to share with six other family members.
“Oh come on Marcus! Get out of the bathroom!” I groaned as I swapped from leg to leg holding my very full bladder, “What could you possibly be doing in there?” I yelled as I slammed my fist onto the plain white door. My frustration grew, as the door didn’t budge, “GET OUT!” I screamed as I kicked the door out of annoyance.
The turning of the bathroom tap allowed a heavy flow of water to enter the very quite hallway, an agitated yell left my lips as I ran down the hallway and into my parent’s private bathroom. I could feel my bladder weakening and could almost imagine the pee running down my legs. As I came crashing into my parent’s bedroom I was glad not to see my mothers sleeping figure but instead an empty bed with the sheets thrown over the top.
“Thank the lord!” I bellowed as I briskly entered the bathroom and found an empty toilet, “Oh the relief!” I almost whooped in joy as the sound of my pee reverberated around the small toilet. Soon my large full bladder was empty and my empty stomach started to growl.
“Come on! Its not like I don’t feed you!” I yelled at my stomach as I heard giggles fill the room, “Mell? Are you in here?” Before my eyes my three-year-old sister appeared in front of my eyes, “Where’s mum?” I asked as I picked her up of the floor.
“Wuwwa is in the kitcwen, she wake breakfasts for we,” She giggled as she played with the crazy blonde curls that made a neat halo around her head. Mell was three and had the problem of not pronouncing certain letters and dropping in W’s when she felt she could.
Sighing I ran my fingers through my own hair and started the short walk to the kitchen, “Come on lil one, we'll go visit mum,” every step down the stairs made my stomach drop a little and the ruckus from our brothers grow.
“Mum! Mum! Woman! Answer me!” Tony yelled throwing his hands in the air his pencil flying out of his hand and landing in Marcus’s bowl of fruit loops, “Oops sorry Marcus…”
“Mum! Tony threw his pencil at me! He did it on purpose I can tell!” Marcus bellowed as he poked his tongue out at Tony.
My mother however was staring at me, no emotion on her face what so ever, she wouldn’t move that was for sure she was related to me, and that unfortunately was something we both had in common.
“Tony don’t throw pencils at your brother, Marcus don’t tattle tale, no one likes a tattle tailor,” Brett our eldest brother groaned as he walked towards the very full pot of coffee, “Now get ready for school the bus will be here in a minute,” he gurgled as he took a large gulp of coffee and moaning as it ran down his throat, “good stuff” he mumbled as he reached for an empty seat at the table.
“Morning mum,” chimed Bell as she walked into the room. There was one thing that drove mum crazy about bell, she wasn’t her daughter. It sickened her every time bell called her mum, she didn’t have the right, “and can you drop me off at school today? It’s the parent day… remembered?”
Mum mumbled a yes and turned back towards the stove where two very burnt eggs sat on the pan, “ Dammit!” she groaned as she took in the site of Mell’s burnt breakfast.
“Ava! What are you standing there for? Go do something useful for once!” Mum yelled as she tried breakfast once again, “Like pack, your cab will be here in 20,” She smiled a sweet smile and flipped her eggs before checking her watch.
My mouth dropped open as I took in my mothers words, “What am I packing for exactly?” Brett dropped his cup on the floor creating thousands of pieces of cup to fall across the tiles.
“Yeah mum, where’s Ava going?” Brett quizzed as he took a protective stance beside me.
Brett was my only actual sibling. He was 7 years older than I at 24 and yet the closest family member I have ever had. He was tall almost 7 feet and was built, I mean he was an MMA fighter and had quite an open career, which scared my mother with safety for the rest of us, but she loved him anyway. His dark skin always confused me, when my mothers and I’s was the palest of white. His dark hair and green eyes where the only things we shared in common.
“Brett, take Mell and go upstairs with the boys this doesn’t concern you,” She whispered as her eyes dropped to the floor before returning and leveling with my own.
Brett like Mother and I was stubborn and kept his ground, “ No, anything that concerns Ava concerns me,” His voice calm yet determined.
Mother groaned and took in the two of us, “Your sister has decided to reach out of this family for a while, and try something a little … different…” My mother suggested letting the words hang in the air.
Pulling at his hair in frustration Brett growled, “What the heck does that even mean?” He looked at me hoping for some kind of answer. I just as confused as him could only shrug my shoulders.
“Don’t look at me, I have nothing to do with this,” My eyes met my mothers a fierce look that mirrored my own was evident in her deep blue eyes.
A sickly sweet smile flickered over my mothers eyes, “Boarding school is what I meant children,” her smile could have given the devils a run for his money. She was like the Cheshire cat on drugs.
Deep laughter rumbled from Brett’s’ figure, “Your kidding right? Avyanna, in boarding school? That’s the funniest thing I have ever heard!” Brett continued his laughter but stopped immediately when he noticed that mother and I held that same stare contest.
“Boarding school mother? I don’t remember this happening in our “Talk” yesterday” I seethed as I placed quotation marks around talk.
She chuckled a little and pointed to her nose, “ I give props to your brother on that one,” She winked at Brett whilst point at the deep purple bruise on her nose before continuing on with her speech, “ But after much thought your father and I decided it was for the best to send you away, for the safety of not only myself and this family but also for you. Now you only have 10 minutes before the car arrives and takes you to the airport, I suggest you hurry and get your ass in that car before I do something I regret,” She huffed as she placed two neat and non burnt eggs in front of my sister before sitting beside her and shoveling small pieces into her tiny mouth.
Saying nothing I took in the words of my mother but before getting angry a smile appeared on my face and wrapped my arms around Brett’s large frame, “Come on! Come help me pack!” I screamed taking to steps at a time.
It was happening I was free to leave this house away from my brothers and little sister away from my parents and most of all away from disappointment. I was free to be me!
