[CHAPTER 22]

Naruto kneeled at Sasuke's side. His body was trembling with exhaustion.

Never again. Naruto thought. I'm not healing anyone else ever again.

His last reserves of chakra were running out;  in just a few minutes he could die.

Kid control the chakra flow. The kyubi said. Even when exhausted like this you shouldn't be acting so weak. With the state you're in it's like all your training was worth nothing. 

I can't. Naruto exclaimed. It's like his body is syphoning my chakra.

Excuses. The nine tails scoffed.

"Stupid Uchiha." Naruto huffed. "Can't even take a punch. What a wimp."

Beads of sweat trailed down Naruto's face. His concentration was slowly breaking, he felt his life force leaking out as Sasuke got better.

"This punk is gonna be the end of me." Naruto murmured. "I'm seriously gonna die healing this weak idiot."

The injured organs in Sasuke's body were mending and the blood flooding into his body systems were returning to their rightful place. Naruto was healing him at an accelerated rate that only seemed to kill the Uzumaki faster.

I'm not an idiot. Sasuke regained consciousness, hearing all that Naruto was saying.

"How can an Uchiha be this hopeless." The Uzumaki felt lightheaded, his eyes nearly closing.

"SHUT UP! I'm not useless! I'm Sasuke Uchiha you idiot!" Sasuke's eyes turned red, a two tomeo pattern appearing in each eye.

"The sharingan huh?" Naruto smirked. "Thought I was gonna go all my life without seeing it."

The sharingan? Sasuke thought. Was that why I had that sudden burst of energy back then? It's finally back.

"Put your sharingan away idiot." Naruto's head fell, not being able to maintain himself any longer. "Don't get your balls in a twist over the guy that just saved you."

The blonde collapsed on top of Sasuke, forcing the air out of his lungs. At a loss of breath Sasuke gulped for air but Naruto's breaths were getting shallow.

"What are you doing?!" Sasuke yelled.

There was no response, no movement, no rise and fall of a breathing chest.

"Kakashi!" Sasuke, unable to move, screamed for help. "Kakashi! Naruto is dying!"

The jonin ran into the room with both Zabuza and Haku.

"That damn kid." Kakashi breathed under his breath. "He loves making it hard to keep my promise to his father."

Haku got to him first, sensing that there was no chakra left in his body.

"There's nothing I can do." He shook his head. "Without any of his chakra left, if I try to heal him with my own chakra his body will just reject the transfusion."

"You'll have to try." Kakashi insisted. "He can't die like this."

"I swear, it's not gonna work." Haku hesitated. "But I'll try."

Haku began to infuse his chakra and just as he said, Naruto's body was rejecting it.

*Going to Naruto now*

His body was shutting down, his organs failing and his consciousness disappearing completely. He was drifting away, nothing tethering him to his physical body.
