"Obviously Prue's gonna win." I said to Emily as I sat down next to her crossed legged in the hall.
"That's to be expected. The other girls have no chance."
The May half-term came and went. The Year Elevens and Six Formers had left and we were now the oldest in the school. Year eleven was just around the corner and it made me feel sick. GCSE year. After the Head Girl was announced, they were throwing a party for the prefects. Quentin was coming. I couldn't be bothered until Mrs Baker said we could bring a plus-one. Emily was my choice. I felt like if she was there with me, we could totally outsmart Quentin.
Prue had been on edge this morning, clearly nervous about the results. She knew she was going to win though. Apparently, Quentin and Prue had got into a massive fight over the holidays. Patience texted me whilst me and Emily were out for afternoon tea. I still had no idea what the fight was over. Olivia was completely gone from Woodside and out of Prue's life. Prue lingered around her phone, waiting it to go off and sighed when it wasn't Olivia. She didn't understand how Olivia had blocked her and that she probably wasn't going to come back.
"I hope they have good food. I skipped breakfast for this."
The last of the girls came and sat down and Mrs Baker placed five chairs on the stage where she was stood.
She came to the near edge of the stage. "Good morning girls. I hope you all slept well. Here we are, the last term of school! The Year Tens are getting prepared for their GCSEs and the Year Sevens have almost finished their first year at Woodside!" She cleared her throat and produced an envelope. "Here, I have the results of the head girl election, as voted by the year ten prefects."
I smiled and clapped. "Go us!"
That was the wrong idea and everyone stared at me. I smirked and sank down. I heard Emily giggle.
"Thank you for that, Susy. Please welcome our potential future head girls!"
Now everyone started clapping as Prue and the other girls came onto the stage and sat down in their seats. Prue gave me and Emily a flash of a smile as she put her hands in her lap nervously.
"Who did you vote for again?" Emily whispered in my ear whilst Mrs Baker was doing a speech.
"Obviously Prue. Have you seen the state of the other girls?" I whispered back to Emily.
"That's not very nice." Emily smirked.
"And now the results!" Mrs Baker barked across the hall.
We went silent. My heart started racing and I could see Prue's face get more and more tense. All of her other seven sisters (excluding Patience) had been Head Girls.
"The new head girl is..." Mrs Baker tore open the envelope. "Prudence King!"
Prue's face lit up as she got up and shook Mrs Baker's hand. The whole hall roared with applause and chants. Me and Emily got up and clapped as she started to do a speech.
"I really don't want to go to this head girl thing." Emily moaned to me as we were ushered into the other hall where the party would be.
"We get to miss English. What's the big deal?" I said to her as I opened the door.
The hall was decorated with balloons and ribbons. There were also many different tables. To be quite frank, the hall looked like a wedding reception.
"That's true. Race you to the last empty table!" Emily shouted and ran.
I ran after her, carefully dodging around the people standing and talking.
