"What are you thinking" asked Henry.
I looked at him, what was I thinking? I sure didn't know. But I did know this.
"Henry, what do you think would happen if we started another uprising?"
"Seriously..." He looked at me incredulously. "That's what you took from this??? They failed! They failed, and Neglova made it so it could never happen again. ""That's what they thought the first time, this proves it's possible."
"Yeah, it proves it's possible to fail- " I lifted my eyebrow, when did Henry get so sassy? "-and anyways yer-"
Suddenly distant steps started thundering closer. We both looked back in unison, and I could see squinting her eyes. The ever moving shape of Jerrhai.
Her eyes widened in horror.
"You can't risk it." Urged Henry. She was getting closer every step.
"Henry, I-" at that moment the infection grew I fell to the floor, grasping my neck.
Henry's eyes looked at me worriedly.
I slowly got back up. Breathe in. My resolve hardened. Breathe out.
"Henry, I don't have much time. Either way, I'm going down."
I took his tiny hands.
"But hiding forever from death, and all this, there almost no difference. I have to do something in spite of it,"
I picked him up holding him to my eye level.
"I'm not going out quietly."
"I know you are right. But if you go, I will be alone, for the first time."
I wanted to look back, even though every second Jerrhai was getting closer. Nevertheless I paused. This was important.
"Henry, I'm sorry I never asked, how are you doing, are you okay?"
"No. But I'm better with you," he seemed to make up his mind. He readjusted his stance as firmer.
"What do I do?" He asked.
"Oh I couldn't possibly ask anything of you Henry." I protested.
"We are doing this, so we do it together. I couldn't stand to be alone like this, it would be a death sentence for me as well."
"You're right." I placed him on the desk. The footsteps at my feet seemingly. I held the thumb drive giving it a quick once over. "I'm going to use this to inspire the life back into people. A jacket and a 5 minute talk worked for Quoran. This contains every single document, picture, file that's important to me it that's not proof of my life. Of life. Then truly there is no hope for this situation." I gave him a side look "Oh, and also They figured out I could hack the glob and control it somehow. I need to you to use it to let as many people as you can out."
"More people could end up to our disadvantage." He warned.
I smirked "Go big or go home."
"You!!" An icy voice accused. It was Jerrhai, for better or worse we were out of time.
"Good luck."
"And to you as well."
I took off running. She darted after me,
"Get back here, you mistake."
"Catch me if you can."
Oof. That sounded so cringey. People did actually say that right? Oh well.
I rounded the corner.
"You can't run, you'll trapped in the hallway."
Uh, quick think of something snappy to say.
"You're the one trapped."
"Me? trapped?" She huffed, still chasing after me.
"I possess all the power here! With the liberarots at my disposal how am I trapped?"
Oh, this was it, I could use that.
"You're going to need that whole slave army anyways, if you are going tn have any hope of catching me."
I attempted to flippantly taunt.
"Will I now?" She venomously. She tapped, bring a pulled up data disk.
The wall opened up before me. A whole crowd of the misted libarots filed out.
Well that worked a little too well. Were they here this whole time?
I high tailed it back to soul room, this was probably enough, I noted looking back. now I just had to-
Oof!
I rammed into something unexpected. Tumbling to the ground.
"It's good to see you again, little human " Neglova taunted.
She towered over me threateningly, a misted army at her side. I struggled to back pedal. But behind me I could see Jerhair catching up. As the crowd closed in, it seemed once more all hope was lost. The end was nigh.
"That's my jacket." A voice said, completely out of no where.
Everyone unconsciously looked the source: a young human adult. One of libarots in the middle that had been blocking the doorway, along with a few others. With the buzzcut, dull outfit, grey ashen skin she looked the same. But I knew who it was.
"Quoran."
She smiled. And pushed all the other misted out of the way. Everyone else stood by in shock, unmoving.
"Go! Oh and I'm going to need my Jacket back eventually." She smiled at me.
I dove through the doorway as Jerrhai and Negolva started moving again. Hundreds of the libarot misted went after me. In the close proximity my dark infection nearly consumed me, their hands reaching out to grab me. I passed by the soul and vessel of Quora again, a pale whitish blur glowing in the darkness. I gasped for relief as I grasped the control desk.
"Henry! Where we at?"
"Well, it turns out it worked, sort of, I released all the rooms, with (unknowing) assistance from Jerrhai, and neglova, everyone's after you," he crawled over the keyboard, to prep the commands for the thumbdrive. I saw a brief flash of emergency alert before he logged out.
"This is either really good or really bad." He chittered nervously.
"Go big or go home." I said with fake confidence. A hand grabbed my ankle I kicked it off. I surveyed the scene before me."Any minute now" A nervous turtle voice rang. He was right. They were getting too close, I grabbed the thumbdrive lumbering around for an insert. Too many people had me to shake them now, I struggled to press on. The infections yearned to swallow me up, but not today, today had a purpose, I had a reason (for the next 40 seconds anyways, after that who knows). My hand skirted over a rectangular opening, I finally found it. They crowd was big enough and started gaining, I couldn't get any further. I desperately grasped it, holding my thumb drive closer.
I concentrated and with all might shoved it in the opening. Just in the nick of time. The next instant i was pulled, swallowed in a pit of despair and hopelessness. I could feel my soul, my very conscious disappearing. Henry raced to upload the thumbdrive in between dodging hands. His tiny turtle moving at maximum speed. The the people overflowed the soul room, in moments none of this could matter. And I could be the living dead, the haunted alive.
The matronesses were there too.
"Why would you fight so hard against this little human, you know you could never win, you could never stand a chance, you could make a difference, you could never do anything that matters, why even try?" She grasped my chin, as the darkness threatened to drown me. I could see the thumbdrive loading process so close. And everything I fought for the all coming down to this moment, win my life or losing everything.
I looked in the eye. My still clear and determined despite it all.
"Because that's what living means."
I saw the world in slow motion, a brief disconnect as my soul was sucked into a room out of body. The loading was just inches away, nothing I could do now. Henry was grabbed and I felt my heart drop. But then his little tail curved and pressed the enter button.
I looked to the sea of liberots people, animals and much more than I could comprehend having the life drained out of them. I looked them all in the eye, giving what could be my last words.
"This is life!"
I screamed to the world, to the void. And they looked and they saw. Every single one of them.
Life.
