Chapter 1
Ivan
September
Miami, Florida
The day I met Cylie was a warm September day. The coffee shops were filled with new collage students just starting out. As always I went to the local coffee shop near Miami University. I sat at my normal spot near the window with a black coffee. No cream no sugar, just plain black. Watching the obviously new freshman getting their coffee and scrambling to get to their classes, while sitting in the same back corner of the shop I sat in everyday and drank my coffee.
In the midst of the commotion I saw a young girl, about my age, as calm as day ordering coffee. Slender figure but not a model more of an average girl. Her hair was a dark chestnut brown down to the shoulder, and when the light hit it right her hair shined. Looking at her she looked a few inches shorter than myself, so making her about 5'6.
When she turned around I saw she was wearing a Miami University t-shirt. It made it pretty obvious she belonged to the Hurricanes. I knew she would never be interested in a high school dropout with a GED, who likes to rave during the night.
Girls like that want a guy who is clean cut, educated, and have a lot of potential in becoming somebody. A guy who owns a nice car and can take them to nice places and pay for nice gifts. I used to date a girl like that, Samantha.
It was always a mystery as why Samantha ever even dated me, I guess she saw something special, but when I didn't change she left me. Every time we were together Samantha complained about how I was wasting my life and always trying to change me. Don't get me wrong I liked her a lot, maybe even loved her. I thought I was even going to marry her someday. Deep down thought I knew Samantha deserved better and she wasn't right for me no matter how much I had told myself she was. When Samantha left me I wasn't as sad as I thought I would be, relieved more than anything.
I got up and went over to the counter to ask for a refill on my black coffee. I handed the blonde girl the black coffee mug and waited for the refill. As I was waiting I turned around only to see the Hurricane girl that reminded me so much of Samantha. She smiled at me, but all I could think of was her white teeth were perfect. Her parents must have paid a fortune on braces. Being polite I smiled back.
"Cylie" the barista girl shouted with a tone that seemed to say I'm tired come get your coffee and get out tone. The Hurricane girl approached the counter and grabbed a tray full of what looked like four orange smoothies. As soon as she turned around I was soaked in orange slime. The good news was I smelled very tasty, but I guess that's what happens when your t-shirt absorbs four large cups of orange smoothies like a sham-wow.
"I'm so sorry! I'm such a klutz! I'm sorry!" Hurricane girl exclaimed almost like the world was coming to an end.
"Its ok I will be fine after I have a shower," I stated with a bit of laughter in my voice.
"Hey! My apartment is just 5 minutes away from here! You could take a shower there and my roommate has clothes that would defiantly fit you! Oh, and I could totally wash your clothes there two!" She exclaimed with excitement in her voice that you would think she solved world hunger.
"Its ok I'm sure I will be just fine" Trying to be polite I explained
"NO! I insist on it! Please?" she stated with the utmost persistence.
"Are you sure?" I asked purely out of curiosity.
"Yes! It is the least I can do, after all I did drench you in orange slime!" she explained
"Ok" I shrugged not knowing what to say. All I could think of is either this girl is a complete nut job, not afraid of me, or feels REALLY guilty.
As we walked out of the coffee shop the short walk to the car felt like 50 years, but then it was all over when we reached a pea green Subaru Outback.
"I'm Cylie, by the way" she said right before she opened the car door. "I should probably get you something to sit on, hold on I'll get a blanket from the back." She looked at me like a deer in the headlight, when I didn't respond by stating my name. Cylie went and opened the trunk and got out a lime green blanket that almost looked home made. Leaning over to the passenger side seat she covered the seat. I know I probably should have said something, but I couldn't stop thinking why? Why is this girl that I barely know anything about giving me a ride to her apartment to take a shower and wash my clothes. Why is this girl I barely know letting a total stranger in her car or even in her home. What if I was a total nut job and was planning on killing her after I got to her place? Why would she trust me? Dose this girl have a death wish or something? I opened the car door and got in; as soon as I did I reached for the seatbelt putting it on.
"Ivan" I told her "Ivan Deseau".
Cylie turned to me and smiled. Not one of those fake smiles, but the one where you could see it in her eyes type of smile.
"I was beginning to think you were mute of something" she stated with sarcasm in her voice. It was hard not to smile, especially since her smile was pretty contagious. "I'm really sorry you know. I'm really clumsy." She sincerely explained.
"Its fine its just some smoothie, not acid it will come right out." Trying to ease the guilt and comfort her. Cylie drove carefully obeying all the rules. It was almost shell shocking considering that all my friends when they drove they drifted into lanes, drove at least 10mph over the designated speed, ran stop signs and on occasion even red lights. Even with myself in the car Cylie didn't even seem to tense up that a stranger was sitting right next to her and on some level it made me feel safe and perfectly comfortable, almost like I had known her my entire life.
We soon pulled into an apartment complex parking lot. I got out of the pea green Subaru making sure I got the blanket I had just sat on so it could be washed, and followed Cylie.
We reached apartment number 32. Cylie grabbed a gold key out of her worn brown leather shoulder bag and inserted it into the white wood door. When we walked in there were three well-built guys sitting on the couch socializing and watching what looked like a baseball game between the Colorado Rockies and the Arizona Diamond Backs, the Rockies were winning by one.
The guys on the couch were all blonde except the one in the middle, he had black hair. The blonde on the left as soon as he spotted us, and gave both Cylie and I a disapproving look. I wondered if he was Cylie's boyfriend or significant other, because I myself have given that look before on several occasions, but Cylie didn't seem to notice so I just shrugged it off. I didn't even notice the other two's expressions.
"The bathroom is on the left, I'll be right back let me get you some clothes and a towel." Cylie stated before exiting and going into another room which I just assumed was her bedroom. As soon as she said that the guy from the middle with the jet black hair got up off the black leather couch and ran after Cylie, as if her life depended on it.
