My alarm let out a blood curling shrill that startled the hell out of me. I rubbed my eyes and hit the snooze button before it woke anyone else up. I let mom and Adam sleep in my bed while I slept on the floor. I stood up and took a long stretch. Lying on the floor made my back hurt like crazy. I squinted at my clock, waiting for my eyes to focus. It was 6:30. I would normally lay back down and fall back to sleep five minutes later, but I was going to do what mom wanted me to do. I was going to school.
School. That little word made me cringe. I haven't been there in about a week and I completely forgot my locker combination, let alone what class I go to first period. I snatched my buried book bag out of my closet sat it in front of the door. I showered and put on a hoodie, some skinny jeans, and a pair of boots I 'borrowed' from Rose and went outside.
I kept walking straight. I wasn't going to let anything distract me. I wanted mom to be happy, and if I had to go to one of the places I hate the most to see her happy, then so be it. Then I was finally there. I looked up at the old building. It seemed taller than usual. I would have still been gazing at the schoool if Rose hadn't snuck up on me.
"Hey Sunny!" she yelled from behind me.
"Rose! Don't do that." I said trying to calm myself down.
"Sorry, but your reaction to that was too funny." she grinned.
Since we were already in a conversation, and since I really didn't want her laughing about scaring me, I decided to ask. "Did the school get re-modeled?"
She laughed. "Uh, no. You're the one who hasn't been in school in like, a month! Anyway, that would never happen. This school is way too cheap to do shit like that."
Rose was the only friend I had since I moved to New York. I still have no idea how we became friends. She's loud, spontaneous, cheeky, and really doesn't think before she speaks. She'll say whatever she's thinking or tell anyone how she honestly feels about them, without regretting what she says. And boy does she have a potty mouth. There's not a day that goes by without her saying at least 100 cuss words. Look wise, I'm no expert, but she's pretty if I don't say so. Her hair isn't too long or short, and she dyes it about once every month. She has brown eyes with little blue flecks in them and really defined cheekbones. I wouldn't be surprised if she turned out being a model, but knowing her, she would be booted from the job the next day for cursing out someone.
The bell rang. "So, if I remember, that means we should go inside, right?" I asked. She smiled. "Ah, Sunny, you still haven't lost your touch. I guess I haven't, but the school sure has.
I didn't get the nice, 'Welcome back.' greeting from anyone. It was more of stops, stares, and whispers. I mean, I've only been gone for a week, right?"
Thankfully, Rose knew my locker combination, and what the first class I had was. so now it was time to get this show on the road. Or at least over with. The worst instead of better were my teachers. They gave me rude comments like, so you've decided to come back Miss Fiora, hm?" and "Long time no see, I could have sworn you were that missing girl on the news." I mean, is that even acceptable? And they wonder why I dont go to school anymore.
After having to do with seven hours that seemed like years of that mess, school finally was over. I was lucky enough to not have run into Cassandra along the way.
"You need a ride home?" Rose asked, pulling up next to me in her new car. I shook my head.
"Nah, I need the exercise anyway." I lied. I actually did need a ride. Walking home took about 20 minutes, and the weather out here was terrible. I didn't want to feel like I was asking too much from her today. She shrugged and drove off before I could change my mind.
I was on my own now, and it was getting darker and darker by the minute, even though it was only five. Now I was really starting to regret not accepting Roses' offer. When I was halfway home, I saw a man on the other side of the street that looked awfully familiar. I stopped and stared a while, feeling like a weirdo. Then he turned and looked at me. I saw and his warm brown eyes and friendly smile. Right at that very moment I knew who it was.
Dad.
