"You stupid freaks! Don't you realize what you just did?" The forklift, for once, was screaming louder than his boss. Moteur seemed to be in a state of shock. At some point during the fight Guido had removed his back tires, leaving him unable to do anything other than stare at the smoking device.
Zane was still trying to process what had just happened. His heart felt sick; he was never going to see Lee or Jack again. I'm sorry, Dads, he thought. I tried.
"We did what we had to do," Nikki responded. Her voice was harder and deeper than it had ever been. He could tell that she was in as much pain as he was; she was just better at hiding it. Zane went to her side and spoke to the forklift.
"No human is ever coming through that machine again." Zane told him. "Accept that."
"You!" Stephens shouted, staring directly at him. "This is your fault!" The forklift charged at him.
Nikki pushed Zane out of the way. He tripped and fell to the floor. He looked up in time to see her jump out of the way of the raging forklift (which plowed into a wall and got its forks stuck). She hit a wall, hard, and crumbled to the floor.
"Nikki!" He was at her side in a second. His mind was racing; he'd done first aid training and had watched countless hours of medical shows, but at that moment he couldn't remember what to do. Tears streamed down his face.
"Oh, Nix," he wept, "I'm so sorry. You didn't have to do that. You could be hurt, or worse, and...Nix, please, stay. I need you. I need to tell you that...I love you. I can't remember a time when I didn't. Please, please, stay. I love you."
No one said anything. Zane kept crying. It was true. He'd always been in love with Nikki. The thought of never hearing her laugh again...his tears kept falling on her face.
He stopped crying when he heard a familiar chuckle. He opened his eyes to see Nikki wiping his tears off of her cheek.
"You're okay," he said, his joy and relief obvious on his voice.
"What kind of medic doesn't check for a pulse?" She teased as she slowly sat up. "I've got a heck of a bruise on my back, but I think I'm okay."
"Okay," he said, wiping the tears off of his face and trying to calm down, "cool. Um, how much of that did you hear?"
"Enough." She smiled at him, and gave him a hug. "I love you too, Zane."
His heart soared. "You do?"
"It just took me a little while to realize it." She started to laugh again. "This is so cliche!"
"Yeah." He started laughing, too. "I know. You want to make it even more cliche and...kiss me?"
"Here's your answer." She moved in and kissed him.
---
They were still kissing three minutes later.
"Aww," Zhara said, tears of joy streaming down her face.
"Finally," Elsie signed, grinning from ear to ear.
"Eww," Abbey said, while Hector pretended to throw up.
The last reaction brought Nikki back to reality. They both blushed and got up. In spite of everything, Nikki felt like everything would be okay, so long as she had Zane.
"Nice one, man," Ramone said to Zane as they went over to the cars (who'd seen everything). Zane turned red, still grinning.
"Not to break up a tender moment," Doc said, "but we have a difficult situation to deal with. We're all still stuck in this compound with a hundred or so security cars waiting to lock us up, Moteur over here wants Lightning's hood on a platter, and that machine is destroyed with you six on the wrong side of it."
"Way to kill the mood," Zhara grumbled.
"I wouldn't worry about Moteur for much longer," Sarge said, grinning and looking at Fillmore.
"What'd you do?" McQueen asked, suspicious.
As if to answer his question, the sound of utter chaos started coming from down the hall. "Nikki," Sarge whispered, "get your friends and hide somewhere." Nikki nodded, and motioned for the other humans to follow her into the (surprisingly spacious) broom closet.
There was a small hole in the doorknob, out of which Nikki could see what was happening. A swarm of armored vehicles, all of whom were wearing army-green paint jobs, swooped in and placed Moteur, the forklift, and all of the security cars that Guido and Luigi had de-tired under military arrest. Within minutes, the only cars left were those from Radiator Springs and a car that Sarge referred to as "General."
Once the General had left, Mater called to them.
"Alright, now, it's safe!" The six of them raced out of the closet.
"Dude," Hector panted while standing next to Abbey, "you need to shower more."
"Shut up," Abbey growled, whacking him with the end of her braid.
"Okay," McQueen said, looking very confused, "Sarge, what did you do?"
Everyone turned to look at the Jeep. He grinned. "If you think that I called the military before we left to report highly illegal and likely dangerous experimentation, you're wrong." He pointed at Fillmore with his tire. "He did."
Fillmore looked highly embarrassed. "No living creature belongs in a cage, man," he defended himself.
"Dad gum!" Mater cheered. "We beat the bad guys!"
Everyone started to celebrate. At least, almost everyone. Nikki smiled, but the reality of their situation was starting to hit her. They were trapped in a world where they didn't belong. Sure, they'd stopped Moteur, but who could say that there wasn't another scientist or rich maniac that would want them behind bars?
Hector gave Nikki a hug. "What are we going to do now?"
She bit her lip. And lied. "We're going to be fine."
"You should know," Sheriff said, driving over using the new tire Luigi had given him, "that you're welcome in Radiator Springs for as long as you need."
"I'm sure Fillmore will let you eat the vegetables he uses for his bio-fuel," McQueen added, "and I know that Sally will let you stay at the motel for as long as you need. Right, Sally?" She didn't answer.
They looked around and saw Sally looking at the machine, which had stopped smoking. She did a three-point-turn and faced the group with an enormous grin. "I think you should come and see this!"
