"𝕀𝕥 𝕨𝕒𝕤 𝕒 𝕕𝕒𝕣𝕜 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕤𝕥𝕠𝕣𝕞𝕪 𝕟𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥..."

That was how the start of Pendragons favorite book started. But today was to be quite bright and sunny. Not that he would ever see the difference.

His whole life was under the earth, or if he wasn't working underground, he was up on the surface, factories and refineries everywhere, little shacks with people who were dirtied and barely surviving with the money that had. There was too much smoke and dirt everywhere to even see the sun.

This didn't mean he hadn't seen it before though.

When his father was still alive, they had gotten a break from inspecting the coal for sediment and his father took him to a small peak overlooking the town to look at a birds nest he had seen on a withering tree. He had seen it when he was walking back from work one day. And for a few seconds through the smoke, there was a brilliant flash of light. At first he had thought it was another mining explosion and he was very scared, so naturally he hid behind his father. But his father pulled him away from hiding behind his leg and lifted him up on his shoulders. From there he saw it.

"Thats the sun m'boy. Few people see it nowadays from where we live, so you're lucky to have seen one!" his father had said.

He looked again and the smoke cleared up a bit to show the light again. He looked in awe as if the gates of heaven had opened up to him. A warm feeling from the light flickered across his face.

While Pendragon had been daydreaming, he was snapped out of it by the smell of coal and the dim light of his mining helmet glowed in the cavern. He was sitting down on the dirt, must've been, 200, 210 meters beneath the earth. He wondered in his head if he would ever see the sun again.

Pendragon sighed as he heard the angry yell of the foreman,

Pendragon sighed as he heard the angry yell of the foreman,

"Get y'r ass out of the dirt shrimp!"

He grunted and got up and stretched his arms, and picked up his pickaxe.

He walked past the yelling foreman and found a good spot on a rocky wall. It was hard to see from the dust so he knew once he started mining he must look really hard for any coal.

He hated mining but he knew it was the only way to make any money on this damn ground. The earth wasn't even healthy enough to grow any crops, all crops are grown on moving platforms very close to sun, usually attached to the cities as well. Crops are very valuable nowadays, more than gold, which lost it value long ago. The main reason he signed up with this company and gave his life away to the contract was not only was it a good deal (10$ every day), any extra ores (diamonds, titanium, etc.) give you 30% of the royalties.
