Romeo's eyes quickly scanned the battlefield to assess the situation. There were five skeletons and the cavern was mostly made of stone with a few andesite patches.
"Two of us against five skeletons? They don't even stand a chance," Romeo quipped. Aiden dodged an arrow and stabbed a skeleton in the ribs with his iron sword. There was a sickening crunch as the skeleton's ribs shattered.
"One down. Four to go," Aiden said.
Romeo hit a skeleton with his sword, sending it flying into the skeleton behind it. The first skeleton fell over and the second was knocked down like a domino. The first skeleton perished from the sword wound and the second was crushed under the weight of the first skeleton's body.
Romeo fought one of the remaining two skeletons as Aiden led the other skeleton into the path of the arrows that its ally was firing.
The skeleton that Romeo was fighting shot an arrow, which hit the other skeleton.
The skeleton became infuriated that its ally fired an arrow at it and the two skeletons began to fight each other, completely ignoring the two people they had been fighting just seconds ago.
"Nice strategy, turning them against each other like that," Romeo commented. Aiden let out a laugh.
"It's pretty easy. Skeletons aren't the sharpest tools in the box," Aiden replied.
The skeleton crumbled into a pile of bones after its ally shot a few more arrows at it. Aiden finished off the skeleton that Romeo had been fighting by driving his sword into its head.
Romeo and Aiden put their swords away and resumed walking.
"I've always really hated caves. They're too quiet, they don't look like anything spectacular, and there's nothing to set them apart from each other. 'Oh look, there's more granite, diorite, and andesite.' Who bloody cares? It's not like the next cave I visit is going to look much different than the last. Give me a fjord over a cave any day of the week," Romeo huffed. He paused for a moment. "Oh! I've got a question I want to ask you. By any chance did you cross paths with Veeva Dash while you were working for Hit the Target?" Romeo added.
Aiden let out a labored sigh.
"Oh. Yeah. Her. Veeva checked on Maya, Gill, and I to make sure we were actually doing the mission Hit the Target assigned us. She said she's been dating Hit the Target for about three years. She's completely under his thumb and follows any orders he gives her. I bet Veeva would sell her left arm if he wanted her to. She looked miserable. Even though she was helping the guy who forced us to steal from the Order Hall, she was pretty nice to us and she was just doing her job. I feel sorry for her," Aiden said. Romeo's eyes widened.
"Yeah, that does sound awful. Thanks for the information," Romeo answered.
While Romeo and Aiden were exploring the left cavern, Jesse and Lukas were making their way down the right tunnel of the cave.
Jesse held a torch in her hand and a dismal expression was on her face.
"I can tell you've been really upset lately. If you ever want to talk about anything that's bothering you, I'm here," Lukas said.
"Okay. As Beacontown's leader and Hero in Residence, I'm supposed to protect my citizens. If something happens to them, that's my fault. I know Romeo attacked Beacontown too, but he at least had standards. He never killed anyone on purpose. Hit the Target, on the other hand, already killed Callie and seems like he'd be totally willing to murder more people. Having the lives of my citizens in serious danger for the first time is really stressing me out," Jesse sighed.
"Jesse, you've done the impossible, so you can definitely handle this. You're one of the strongest, bravest girls I've ever met," Lukas responded. Jesse blushed and smiled.
"Yeah, you're right. Thank you," Jesse answered. Lukas nodded, then looked ahead and squinted.
"Hey, I think I see some light up there," Lukas piped up.
"So... it's either an exit or lava," Jesse said.
"Let's hope it's an exit," Lukas muttered. Jesse held back a laugh and the two of them walked towards the light.
The source of the light was a passage that led out of the cave.
"Oh my gosh, we're actually getting out of here!" Jesse exclaimed.
"How are we going to signal Aiden and Romeo?" Lukas asked. Jesse bit her lip.
"Crap. I hadn't thought about that," Jesse realized. She knitted her eyebrows together. "Maybe we could walk to them and leave a trail of torches so we don't forget where the exit is?" Jesse added.
"Yeah. Sounds good. We're gonna have to space them out more than usual though because we don't have that many torches," Lukas replied.
"Got it," Jesse said.
Jesse and Lukas left a trail of torches as they walked back to the beginning of the corridor, which illuminated the cavern with an orangish yellow glow.
"Ro, we found an exit!" Jesse called out.
Romeo and Aiden ran back to the beginning of the corridor.
"Wow, this cavern has great acoustics. I could really hear you. That being said, I still hate this place and want to leave as soon as possible," Romeo commented. Lukas raised his hand.
"Yeah, same here. I definitely want to leave," Lukas agreed.
Jesse held back a laugh and the four of them walked out of the cave together.
