knights & princesses & royals (oh my!)

once upon a time, there was a kingdom. this kingdom was a happy one, with plentiful harvests and full coffers. the peasants were few and far between, and the king was a benevolent man. still, the threat of things too big to comprehend loomed large on the horizon. dragons, giants, magic. nobody in the kingdom has ever seen magic beyond what the court magician can do. it's up to a group of knights (and one rogue princess) to find and conquer these unknowable things. will you be one of them?

personality/backstory: enlisted into the king's knights at 15, viola has been training for ten years. she was found on the doorstep of the head of the guard when she was a baby, and he raised her as his own. he raised her to be tough, and to not take any crap from anybody, and so she doesn't. she might break your arm if you look at her wrong. she doesn't know where she comes from, but she doesn't mind that much. she grew up surrounded by love, and that's all that matters to her. her last name is 'of the mountains' since that's the name they assign to all the unknown orphans.

personality/backstory: classic coy, immature princess. she likes to tease the knights back home by throwing acorns at their helmets and seeing which makes the loudest sound. she has been forbidden from doing this on the journey. she is the crown (and only) princess of her kingdom, learning how to rule from her mother. her father died when she was thirteen. she wanted to come on this journey because she has been sheltered her whole life, and of course the first thing she wants to do is see magic. she's never met another magic user, but she really wants to. she doesn't often speak about her emotions, but she is very lonely.

personality/backstory: he has been in the guard for over 30 years, and the head of the guard for at least 20 of those. he found viola on his doorstep when she was a baby, and raised her with his husband alongside their two sons. they treated and loved them all equally. he's very proud to see viola on this mission, but also very worried for her. alaric is a very protective man, even when he knows that those he's protecting can fend for themselves. his first love died when he wasn't around to protect them, and now he worries about everyone else while he isn't there. he is rather stoic, though, so it can be a little hard to tell how he feels about you.

personality/backstory: he's only been in training to become a knight for a year, and he is quickly setting the record to be the quickest trainee to attain knighthood in a century. he is brash and boastful, and frankly a little annoying, but he will also lift you over his head at the slightest suggestion (if you're into that). he can also be gentle, though. he has a talent with animals, especially horses. he is a veritable horse whisperer. if you take the time to let him calm down around you and stop trying to impress you, he is a real gentleman.
