"Beep! Beep! Beep!"
Jack awoke to the sound of the alarm clock slicing through the morning air. He sat up while rubbing his eyes, then stared at the clock. 7:00.
He'd almost forgotten that it was the day the girls came back from their two month-long trip to South America. He glanced across the room at his snoozing roommate, who was sprawled out over his bed. Jack was amazed that he could sleep through all this racket the alarm was making. He was never an early riser, especially on weekends. 'He probably could sleep through World War Three, if he wanted,' Jack thought to himself. However, he was getting tired of all this beeping.
"Hey! Eric!" He shouted. "Could you be a pal and hit the snooze button?" No response. "C'mon man, it's time to get up," he said, reaching for a pillow. "Are you awake?"
"...No," Eric mumbled, his face buried in blankets. Jack threw the pillow and hit him on the back of the head.
"Why do I even bother?" Jack muttered. He got out of bed and shut the alarm off himself. "GET UP!" He shouted near Eric's ear. Eric turned on his side, adjusting his eyes to the daylight.
"Remind me why we have to wake up so early on a Saturday?" He moaned.
"Because we don't want to miss greeting Topanga, Angela, and Rachel at the airport?" Jack replied.
"Give me one good reason why I should leave this bed right now," Eric said.
"Breakfast," Jack suggested.
"I'm up, I'm up!" Eric got out of bed and wandered to the kitchen.Meanwhile, in the dorm room, Cory and Shawn were hurrying to get dressed and be ready for the girls' arrival.
"Ok, we're going to stop by the apartment to pick up Eric and Jack, then head straight to the airport?" Shawn said, buttoning up his shirt.
"That seems to be the plan," Cory replied, as he finished brushing his teeth. "I am just so excited Shawny. I haven't seen Topanga for two whole months! I can't wait to see her again. This is perfect timing, with our anniversary being this week and all!" With a huge grin on his face, he folded his pajamas and delicately placed them in the drawer.
"Yeah," Shawn began, "I don't think you two have ever been apart this long."
"Nope, and I never want to be away from her ever again. Not even for more than a second." Cory sighed.
"You two are freaks, you know that?" Shawn smiled.
"I know. But I love her and want to be with her 'til she dies." Cory replied. "What about you? Happy to see Angela?" He asked.
"Yeah. Just not quite as psyched as you, Romeo. C'mon. We've got brothers to pick up." He said, as they grabbed their jackets and walked out the door.Eric and Jack were eating breakfast at the counter when they heard a knock at the door.
"Who is it?" Eric yelled, with a mouth full of pop tart.
"Your ride," Shawn replied from behind the door. Jack ran to the door and let them in.
"You guys ready to go?" Cory asked.
"Pretty much," Jack said, putting on a sweatshirt. "C'mon Eric."
Eric quickly shoved the rest of his pop tart into his mouth and threw a jacket on. The four exited the building, and piled into the car. Cory stared out of the window.
"What do you think it's gonna be like, Shawn?"
"What's what gonna be like?" He replied, his eyes on the road.
"Our anniversary."
Eric and Jack exchanged looks in the backseat, as if Cory was talking about him and Shawn.
"Oh no. Here you go again...Probably humiliating, just like every other year. How long have you two been dating? 19 years?" Shawn asked.
"Yeah, but this time it will be even worse. She's coming back from a long trip from Brazil... Probably with a gorgeous tan and blonde streaks in her hair... I mean, how will a lame date at Chubbies compare to where she's been used to eating? Seafood next to the beach while the sun is setting..."
"Ugh, stop that before you make me puke," Shawn was annoyed by Cory's cheesiness.
He sighed. "I just wish Philadelphia was as romantic as South America."
"So...have you guys missed Rachel much?" Shawn asked, trying to get the subject off of Topanga.
"Pshh, why would we miss having a beautiful redhead sleeping in the room across from us and making us breakfast every morning?" Eric replied.
"Oh dear lord, he used sarcasm," Jack teased. "I love having Rachel live with us, but it was nice just being with Eric again," Jack said. "No matter how difficult he can be sometimes..."
"No more competition, eh?" Cory asked.
"Plus, I can finally walk around the apartment without having to put on pants. Oh, and drink directly from the milk jug," Eric added.
Jack paused. "You drank from the milk jug?"
Eric shrugged. The car turned into the parking lot.
"Well, here we are." Shawn said.
"Topanga, here I come!" Cory shouted, as he got out of the car.It was already 8:30 and the gang was still waiting.
"Where could they be?" Cory asked. "Their flight was supposed to land at 8:00."
"I don't know..." Shawn said. "Maybe we should call them and ask where they are."
"Looks like they beat us to it," Cory replied. His bulky 90s cell phone was already ringing. "Hello? Topanga! Where are you?"
"Hi Cory," a feminine voice came through the phone. "We're actually... Still on the island. The only plane we have here is having trouble, and they said it will take a couple days to get it up and running again." Cory's face became filled with shock.
"But Topanga, our anniversary..."
"I know Cory. I'm so sorry. I wish I could be there with you right now. I'll let you know when they give us a time to fly back," she said. "I love you,"
"I love you, too," he said, "Bye." Cory hung up the phone.
"They won't be coming back for a few days." He said, heartbroken that he was going to miss their anniversary.
"Yesss, a few more days of milk from the jug!" Eric said, trying to lighten up the mood. Jack nudged him. Clearly it wasn't helping.
"I'm sorry Cor," Shawn said.
"It's ok... Guess it saves me from another year of embarrassment. I always screw up our anniversaries, anyway." Cory replied. "I guess I'll just send her a card or something."
"Maybe... You won't have to." Eric said, pointing to a ticket booth.
"Are you suggesting that WE fly to the island?" Cory asked.
"I dunno," Eric mumbled.
"We could never afford a big, fancy flight like that." Shawn said.
"Actually..." Jack said, grabbing the phone and dialing a number. After some time, Jack hung up and faced the group with a big smile on his face. "My stepdad just bought us four tickets to the island."
