Sky was busy being the lookout for Joan and mostly it was due to her eager excitement. Sky felt both excited and nervous, but she's trying her best to hide her uncertainty. She still remembers what her father had told her when he placed his necklace around her neck.
His voice echoes into her head, "Sky, remember that dragons can sense good people. They only bond with people who are being your truest self."
"When I grow, I want to be just like you," Sky remembered saying to her Dad.
Dad had gave her a gentle smile and remembered him saying, "When you grow up, you should be just like you."
Sky had taken her Dad's advice to the heart after she said her farewells to the rest of her family before she had set sail with Joan and Seaspray. She had keeping her wits on her, in case for anything unexpected occurs. She had heard rumors about the Warlords who had once worked for Drago and the Night Fury Slayer are now working by their own terms. Her mother had gave Sky her leather brown journal that has important facts about dragons (which doesn't involve how to kill them) and had styled her golden hair into two smaller braids holding back her bangs, while the rest of her hair flows over her shoulders. Her older brother had gave her his second-favorite battle knife for the incoming battles she might face in the future.
But the more she kept looking out over the sea, she saw more and more trading ships coming from all over Barbaric Archipelago from different tribes. They were probably carrying other cadets from the other tribes for the School of Dragons. The other trading ships soon started to surround them like a flock of migrating dragons or a pod of underwater dragons.
Sky looked away and looked up at the dawning sky. The sky was in the rich shade of golden and started to turn into its regular blue. The sun was rising like alight ember rising from deep blues of the sea. Sky heard the sound of the seagulls and Terrible Terrors overhead as they continued sailing. The ocean was in the same shade as Sky's ocean-colored eyes.
Sky gave an amazed laugh when she saw a huge pod of dolphins swimming and jumping alongside them with a couple of underwater dragons. Sky dipped her hand into the water and started skimming the salty waters. Sky lifted her hand just as quickly before any dragons gotten too close to her. She felt a loud whoosh and a loud splash into the ocean, Sky saw it was only Seaspray swimming by the trading ship.
"Dang it Spray!" Despite Joan's annoyed voice, there was an undertone of fond amusement coloring his voice that had made Sky laughed at the amusing scene. When she had turned around, Sky had burst out laughing at Joan, dripping wet and a smug Fastfin. "You just have drench me, don't you?"
Seaspray poked his head out of the water and cooed what seems to be either laughter or amusement before diving back into the water to hunt for his fishy meal. Joan just rolled his eyes at the dragon before he continued steering his trading ship.
"Hey Joan," called out another sea trader from Wingmaiden Island. "Is it okay we hitch a ride with you lot? My ship needs some less weight to be fixed."
"Sure thing, I'll help once we get to the island of Ormr," Joan called back to the sea trader.
Sky's ears perked up when she heard the unclaimed island's name and remembered what it was from her Dad's adventure tales and the Dragon Riders' adventures she asked, "Ain't that the place where the Dragon Flyers were at?" Where Viggo Grimborn and his Skrill took their final stand to protect Hiccup and Toothless? Sky added quietly in her mind.
"Aye, it was," admitted Joan. "I'm not too fond of the place, but the island's abandoned with the expectation of wild dragons living there."
"Are we going to explore the island?" Sky's once nervous energy is long gone with her travels with Joan and Seaspray, she's now brimming with the excitement of the incoming adventures. But her lack of her Berserker spirit and confidence in herself remains the same.
"I don't see why not," Joan said with a shrug. "But we have to be careful, not all wild dragons are friendly as the ones from Berk."
"Okay Joan," agreed Sky as she caught the gaze of a dark brown-eyed, olive skinned, and curly black-haired teen girl from the Wingmaiden Island trading ship.
Sky smiled and gave the girl a wave, the girl smiled back at Sky and waved back at her. Sky soon saw the speck of the appearing island in the distance and felt herself came up with an idea. She looked back at the girl who was watching her with rapt interest, Sky pointed to herself and pointed to the girl then at the island. The girl smiled and nodded her agreement, they're both going to meet as soon as the ships gotten closer to each other.
As soon as the girl stepped onto the ship, Sky soon smiled when she saw the black-haired teen girl approaching her with a friendly smile, Sky had also started to walk towards the black-haired girl, since it was a secret meaning to show that person wasn't afraid of the other and was a test to check if the newcomer was a friend or a foe.
The two of them soon stopped in front of each other and they both started looking at each with curiosity instead of hostility. Sky could see that Wingmaiden girl was wearing clothes made out of Razorwhip scales with a white tunic lined in bronze linen, Sky admires the girl's resourcefulness when it comes to both clothes and dragons. The girl had also pulled her black hair into a ponytail that goes over her shoulders to keep some of her hair out of her dark brown eyes.
"So... Hi, I'm Sky." Sky offered her hand to the Wingmaiden girl. "Sky Daphne Dagsbrún of Berserker Island."
"I'm Rowan of Wingmaiden Island." Rowan shook Sky's hand, a sign of both friendship and alliance. "You're going to the School, right?"
"That's right," confirmed Sky. "But me and my family weren't really part of the war, till the Warlords had came and now almost everyone is riding dragons in self-defense against the Dragon Hunters and Flyers."
"Noted," Rowan said. "I came from all the way from beyond the Barbaric Archipelago."
"I noticed." Sky eyed Rowan's clothes impressively that glinted in the sunlight like crystals. "Nice clothes by the way."
"Thanks." Rowan sat down on the bench and Sky had also sat down next to her. Rowan soon had a mischievous gleam in her brown eyes as she looked at Sky. "Say Sky, do you like to meet the others?"
"Yes?" Sky looked at Rowan in confusion, unsure of what to make Rowan's sudden change in topic.
Rowan gestured for Sky to follow her lead to the front of the trading ship. Rowan waved at the other kids on the trading ship, the other kids waved back to her. Sky stood next to Rowan and gave them a small wave of her own, the others also nodded to Sky with shy smiles.
"I can't wait to see New Berk and befriend the dragons there," said Sky excitedly.
"Me too Sky," Rowan said as both girl brushed their hands through the water, a fine spray of sea water went behind their hands. "I'm hoping to befriend a dragon from the Sharp Class. How about you?"
"I'm hoping to bond with any type of dragon that has the similar personality as I do," said Sky.
"Me too," Rowan admitted.
The girls continued to talk to each other and getting to know each other better when Rowan had stopped and had started counting the number of the ships. Rowan's expression soon became slightly troubled and fearful. She turned to look out with an anxious expression. Sky suddenly had a horrible feeling in her gut about this.
"Um... Sky, you wouldn't happened to see the Outcast trading ship?" Rowan asked nervously.
Sky remembered seeing the Outcast's symbol of a red Viking helmet a few times in the past and may or may not had outwit a few of the Outcast soldiers when they had invaded Berserker Island and came looking for the kids. But Sky was sure she had saw the Outcast trading ship throughout the week, but it seemed to have disappeared this morning.
"I saw it throughout the week." Sky looked at the trading ships, hoping she had missed counted. "But it seemed to have disappeared."
"Oh no," moaned Rowan. "A girl named Vigga and a boy named Brant are both aboard that ship, I hope I they're alright."
"Maybe they had went ahead," Sky said reassuringly. "I may have met a few Outcasts before and even I know they have a competitive side. They just probably raced ahead to get to New Berk first."
"You're probably right," Rowan said, relaxing. "I forgotten how competitive Brant and Vigga are when I first saw them."
"Really?" Sky looked at Rowan curiously.
"Yeah, I saw those two competing for everything," added Rowan. "It was amusing and annoying at the same time."
"I sure can't wait to see that," Sky said, chuckling.
"Me too." Rowan gave an amused shake of her head before she gently punched Sky's shoulder and Sky nudged Rowan playfully. "Lets talk about something else."
"Sure," said Sky with an easy shrug and gotten out her mother's dragon journal. "How about a quick quiz based off the dragons we might know about?"
"Fine by me." Rowan smiled again and her brown eyes gleamed playfully.
Throughout their trip together, Sky was very surprised how many dragon questions Rowan had gotten right. According to Rowan, her favorite past time was to read books and study anything that might come up. Sky is very impressed with Rowan's knowledge about almost everything including dragons and Vikings, her intelligence seems to equal to Hiccup.
"Which dragon do you want to be?" Sky asked Rowan after the dragon quizzes were done.
"I would want to be a Stormcutter," said Rowan. "They're intelligent and wise as well as they are brave and curious. What about you?"
"Not sure yet," Sky said with a sigh. "I'll figure it out."
Rowan smiled at Sky with sympathy and patted Sky's shoulder in reassurance.
"Don't worry," reassured Rowan. "Once we get to the School of Dragons, we can figure it out together."
"I hope you're right." Sky's voice became soft as she looked up at the incoming night sky as the first stars started to show with the silvery outline of the moon.
