Sky jumped at the sound of roaring from outside, she immediately came out of her cabin to see what was happening. She quickly got off of the trading boat and onto the beach. She gasped in surprise when she saw what was happening. The amber sky outlined the ongoing attack that was happening. There was unknown Viking ships attacking the Berkian Vikings. The sky was alight with flying explosive cannonballs and dragon fires from the ridden dragons. Sky could see that the Berkian battle ships were alined with the invaders and the Vikings started fighting with their weapons aboard the ships.
She felt both the excitement of the battle and terrifying fear of being in the battle. Fire had started to spread throughout the Viking ships, to allies and enemies alike.
"By the gods!" yelped Sky in horror.
Sky turned to see that Joan and the other sea traders were riding their dragons and joining in on the battle. Sky gulped nervously, uncertain of how to feel about the battle.
"Sky!" cried out Rowan from one of the further docks. "We must split up and find the Dragon Riders!"
Thanks to Rowan, Sky cleared away her panic of the ongoing battle and had started to think more clearer. Sky saw a young man with deep brown hair and in black armor accented with bright red astride on a saddled Night Fury with green eyes landing on cliff above the village of New Berk. She caught a quick glimpse of Fishlegs and Meatlug protecting the village with Tuftnut and Ruffnut, who are both astride on Barf and Belch. Sky had seen the Dragon Riders a few times before when she was younger, but she was too shy and unsure how to meet them.
She cleared her throat and called out, "Okay Rowan, you see if you could find Fishlegs and Meatlug. I'll try to get to Hiccup and Toothless!"
"Hey! How about us?" called out the black-haired and pale-skinned girl with brown eyes and wearing red clothes to show that she's originally from Outcast Island.
"We don't want to miss out on the action!" Brant added, a black-haired boy and was wearing bright green to represent he's originally from Huttsgalor.
Sky caught a glimpse of Astrid astride on Stormfly overhead through the smoke as she lead an army of Dragon Riders towards the battle ships. Nearby, Snotlout was astride on Hookfang and was setting the enemy's battle ships on fire.
"You two see if you can help Astrid and Snotlout," called out Sky. "We must help the people and the dragons of Berk."
Sky and her friends all separated as quickly as they can. Sky continued looking around and had to quickly dodged the flaming arrows and dragon fire. She soon to carefully run across a thin, twisting cliff bridge that leads up towards where Hiccup and Toothless were both hovering over one of the cliffs as he led the children and the injured dragons away. She almost lost her balance a few times, but had quickly regained her balance from falling. But as she was climbing, Sky thought she had saw a quick glimpse of deep blue and purple scales flying through the clouds overhead, but it had disappeared all too quickly.
Sky felt her heart hammering in her chest like a Gronckle's flapping wings. She never felt so terrified and excited before, she managed to calm herself down with deep breaths. Hiccup must of seen her, since he made Toothless land on the cliff and turned to look at Sky.
"You're Sky Dagsbrún, the new student?" Sky nodded to Hiccup, feeling a little winded from the climb. "I'm Hiccup, sorry for the brief introduction, you can see that Berk is under attack. We need to get in the air and stop these raiders from capturing dragons!"
Toothless made a deep rumbling sound in his throat and glared out at the raiders with an angry growl.
"Come on, you hitch a ride with me and Toothless." Hiccup mounted Toothless and helped Sky mount in front of him.
There was a dip between his spine and his wings that was just the right size for a human or two to kneel in and which is the place where Hiccup had placed the saddle on Toothless, Sky had placed her hands on the saddle.
That's when Toothless launched into the air. They were flying. They were FLYING! Sky was flying ON A DRAGON!
Sky wished she could she could enjoy it if they weren't in the middle of an ongoing battle between allies and enemies. The air was in the surprising combination of cold from the incoming evening and hot from the burning fires below. Sky glanced down and saw the others helping with the battle. Many other Berkians were fighting against the Dragon Raiders. Sky felt a little relieved to see most of the dragons had been released and the Dragon Riders had rescued the eggs. They soon started flying over the bay and in between the ships, while dodging the flying arrows. The raiders yelled in alarm when they saw Toothless flying overhead.
They soon saw Astrid and Vigga flying on the back of Stormfly, they seemed to be watching the battle and waiting for them to arrive.
"I need you to take the control and fly us to Astrid and Vigga," said Hiccup. "Don't worry about flying... Toothless and I are with you." Sky became instantly tensed, because she never actually flew on a dragon before. "Toothless is already an expert flier. You just need to tell him where to go."
Sky nodded and leaned forward, Toothless had started started to follow her instructions almost instantly. They soon started to fly towards Astrid, Vigga, and Stormfly. Astrid turned to look at them with a smile, Vigga released a breath and looked quite relieved to see Sky, Hiccup, and Toothless.
"Hiccup... and another new student!?" Astrid looked at Vigga, who sat behind her, and at Sky in surprise before stating to Sky and Hiccup. "Well, you chose a great time to join the fight. They're starting to press the attack."
"Well, let's take care of that!" said Hiccup, sounding determined to save the dragons and their homes.
They soon started flying over the bay and this time Astrid took the lead with Vigga and Stormfly. Sky almost had a panic attack when she saw that Hiccup had jumped off Toothless and started GLIDING!? down towards one of the raiding ships and started fighting the soldiers there with a sword that has its blade on fire?
Astrid and Stormfly soon started flying alongside Sky and Toothless.
"That just leaves two ships for you and me!" Astrid said, sounding excited to get rid of the raiders and unsurprised by Hiccup's inventions. "Avoid the flying arrows and shoot at the ships with the red sails!"
Astrid and Stormfly both flew off to take care one of the raiding ships. Sky soon patted and nodded at Toothless, who tilted his head at her and had fired at the third raiding ship. The raiding ship soon lit up in flames and the raiders had jumped overboard to get away from the fire.
Toothless soon started to fly towards one of the docks that has a burnt out raiding ship and a cage being hung on by ropes by the raiding ship. Sky could see there was some sort of dragon trapped inside, about the similar size as Toothless, though a little younger looking. Sky was glad to see Hiccup there with Astrid and Stormfly on the beach.
"We did it!" Astrid said, grinning. "Those lousy trappers will have a long way to swim home from here."
Sky laughed, she felt surprisingly giddy from the battle and riding on one of the most famous dragons of Berk.
"Great job you two, but it's not over yet." Sky and Hiccup both glanced up at the frightened, caged dragon. "These raiders caught a lot of dragons in their traps and had injured them. The twins are going around destroying the traps, but we have to free these dragons."
Sky soon dismounted Toothless as she looked up at the trapped dragon, barely noticing that Toothless had joined Hiccup's side. The dragon in the cage seemed to become much calmer, but still looks wary.
"Go and see if you can find anything to free this poor dragon," Hiccup said to Sky.
Sky soon found an axe and ran towards the rope that was holding up the caged dragon and immediately started cutting the ropes. When she was done, Sky heard Hiccup say, "Steady, steady... there's just one more problem for us to fix. Find the combination for the lock."
Sky soon found the lock combination and quickly memorized it, she suddenly felt very desperate into freeing the dragon. She soon went back to the cage and put the combination onto the lock.
Sky backed up a bit as the cage door had opened and the dragon, which turned out to be a beautiful Sand Wraith, had started to walk out slowly and warily.
Sky sucked on her breath as she began to admire the regal dragon. She caught a glimpse of its face — not like the other dragons she had seen, but perfectly like an elegant Fury's, with the most intelligent and bright amber eyes she had ever seen. When its scales caught the dusky sun, the dragon's scales and wings sparkled in the color shades of bright tawny golden, flecked with hints of both beige and amber. The Sand Wraith is both sleek and lithe as well as she is strong and well-muscled.
"There, there. Take it easy fella." Hiccup turned to look at Sky with a small smile. "Talk to her. Reach out your hand. Like this." Hiccup reached out his hand and Toothless placed his snout in Hiccup's hand before they both separated to look at her and the Sand Wraith.
With fluid movements, her muscles churned underneath her scales, the majestic dragon inched closer towards Sky with such elegance and strength with a hint of feistiness and cheekiness, her scales seemed to radiate with power.
Sky raised her right hand in front of her, she quickly looked as she suddenly felt unsure of how to befriend one of the most elusive and feistiest dragons that ever lived. The Sand Wraith snorted softly before she leaned into Sky's palm, purring softly, making Sky look up at the golden dragon in surprise. The dragon's scales felt like a lizard's, smooth and warm, to the touch and she felt the dragon's scales warmed her hand like sunbaked stones.
The Sand Wraith purred into Sky's hand and rumbled softly, the two of them looked at each other. She nuzzled Sky's arm and they both met each other's eyes, Sky somehow knew that they were confirmed as equals. The two of them both met each other's eyes. Emotions rolled around inside Sky like a whirlwind. She don't know whether to feel scared or awed or joyful or uncertainty. New feelings like lightning raced between them: newly made trust, joy, curiosity, and understanding. Behind those amber eyes seemed to hide more intelligence than seemed possible for any dragon and the dragon's eyes seemed to have the reflection of Sky's soul.
Sky knew she had to name her new dragon friend. A great name that matches the greatness, the beautifulness, and fierceness that her dragon was carrying within her. Sky started petting the beautiful dragon's head, making the Sand Wraith purring. Sky closed her eyes thoughtfully, thinking up a good name for her dragon that will suit her perfectly.
"You blaze like the sun," murmured Sky to the Sand Wraith as she reopened her eyes. Sky hesitated a bit before she smiled at the dragon fondly. "Can I call you Sunblaze?"
The Sand Wraith cooed softly and started nuzzling Sky, making Sky laugh and the two of them both placed their foreheads against each other's, their hearts beats as one as their breaths were one just as well. It had confirmed to her that the Sand Wraith wants to be called Sunblaze from now on. Sky couldn't help, but feel as if she had found a missing piece of herself that she didn't know was missing.
Sky and Sunblaze both stepped back, they both smiled at each other and they both turned around to see Sky's friends had bonded with friendly dragons of their own. Rowan, Vigga, Brant, and an unknown boy made a semicircle around Sky and Sunblaze.
Sky smiled to see that Rowan had bonded with a clever and curious female Stormcutter: the Stormcutter has dark brown scales, a cream underbelly, and shimmering reddish-brown highlights. The dragon's face has two long spines that branch off his nose and to the side with a owl-like face. Sky turned to see that Brant had bonded with a fierce and proud male Monstrous Nightmare: the Monstrous Nightmare has bright red scales and decorated with dark blue stripes. The Monstrous Nightmare's wings are hinted with amber and the dragon's eyes are striking blue. Vigga had bonded with a female Skrill: the Skrill has dark purple and blue scales, a darker blue underbelly, and deep orange eyes. Lastly, the unknown boy had bonded with a male Swiftwing: the Swiftwing has blue scales with darker blue spines on the lower portion of his tail, a cream-colored underbelly and wings, darker blue stripes marked over his scales, and hazel-colored eyes.
They soon took their dragons to Gobber and let him have a look at dragons. The dragons are all healthy, just a little restless and shaken. After that, they soon went to the School and stood by their respective houses to have a stronger knowledge about each other.
"Wow, that rumor about coming to this school is true," Vigga commented with an amused grin as she petted her purring Monstrous Nightmare's head. "People can bond with dragons when you fight alongside the Dragon Riders."
"You fought?" asked Brant, sounding surprised.
"Lets just say a few enemy Vikings may or may not have gotten their undies wet." Vigga gave them a playful smirk and her big brown eyes gleamed mischievously.
"Ew." Sky wrinkled her nose at the disgusting thought, but slightly amused by the cowardly raiders' panic. She soon turned to look at the quiet boy. "Speaking of which. I mean no offense towards you, but who are you?"
"I'm Lionheart. I'm from Caldera Cay." The boy's voice was quiet as he pulled off his black cloak and revealed his features. He seemed pretty lean and strong with tanned skin, dark brown hair, and warm hazel eyes. "But I'm originally from New Berk."
"Nice to meet you Lionheart," greeted Sky with a smile.
"Caldera Cay?" Rowan commented with a puzzled frown. "But I don't think the Defenders of the Wing had ever flew on dragons before, with the exception of the King and Queen there."
"Row," Sky warned her friend, seeing Lionheart flinched back a bit and has a faint feeling that Rowan had trended on a sensitive topic.
"I was adopted into the tribe," Lionheart admitted. "Me and my sister aren't on the best terms after our parents disowned her for becoming a Warlord with Drago and the others."
"Ouch," said Brant with a sympathetic wince. "Talk about tough luck."
"How about we talk about something else?" Sky interrupted, sensing that Lionheart has became uneasy at the topic.
"Sure thing," said Vigga, while Lionheart had threw a grateful look at Sky and she gave him an understanding smile. "We were both kids of Outcast Island with our mother, till we both gotten the letters and had came here."
"Noted," Rowan said with a nod. "I'm from Wingmaiden Island and I received my letter when I was helping take of the baby Razorwhips with my sisters." Rowan looked at Sky and gently bumped against Sky. "How about you Sky? We barely know anything about you."
Sky was unsure about what to say, since she doesn't speak about her background too much and she doesn't want anybody pity, which makes her feel both useless and annoyed. Besides, Sky knew that she lacks the Beserker's spirit or anything that relates to the Bereskers.
"Sky?" Rowan prompted gently, making Sky stopped her musings. They were all looking at Sky, including all their new dragon friends.
Sky sighed before she said softly, "I'm from Berserker Island, but I'm a bit of a loner there."
"Really?" Brant tilted his head at Sky with confusion and surprisingly not out of accusation or cruel amusement like the Warlords' soldiers that had attacked their island years back. "Why?"
"I'm afraid that I lack the Berserker's spirit when it comes to fighting or anything mostly," said Sky as she looked away from the others and started petting Sunblaze, who started nudging her gently with her snout. Sky soon felt herself jumped in place when she suddenly felt Vigga's hand placed on her shoulder.
"Don't fret about it Sky," Vigga reassured Sky. "It probably takes time for your Berserker instincts to kick in."
"I hope you're right," said Sky with a sigh. "That's what had made me an outcast back home." Sky shook off her gloomy thoughts and looked at her new friends. "Anyways, are you guys going to be Dragon Riders back at your home islands or at Berk?"
"Back at home," Rowan said with a smile. "But I guess I could stick around here, though I have to go home for any emergencies and the holidays."
"We don't have much of a home from we're from," admitted Aspen.
"We're going to be living at New Berk and be the Riders there," Vigga added with a smile. "You're all free to stop by our place if you're in the area."
"Thanks Vigga," said Sky with a small smile. "Like Rowan, I'm going to stay here unless my family needs my aid." Sunblaze lets out an annoyed rumble and swatted at Sky with her ear-plate. "I mean, our aid." Sunblaze purred as Sky gently petted her dragon underneath her chin.
"Okay, everyone we better head to our sleeping quarters." Sky watched as their dragons flew to rest in the stables before following Vigga and Rowan to their sleeping quarters to be ready tomorrow's lessons.
