I walked down a back road that lead to the corner store on Monroe street. My little town of Sunset Bay only has a few stores down main street. The corner store, and antique shop, a hardware store, a diner and a small coffee shop that I spend seventy-five percent of my time in.
As I walked into the store the little buzzer made a noise. I smiled and said hello to Mrs. Salazar who ran the store during the day. She was a small, older hispanic lady who didn't talk other then 'hello', 'good-bye', and 'have a nice day!', but she was still the nicest person I know in this little town. I walk back to the tea and energy drink area. I grab my Arnold Palmer and a monster and head towards the candy isle, I grab a pack of M&M's and walked up to the register. I put all that I had on the small area next to the cash register.
"Hello" Mrs. Salazar says with a smile.
"Hi" I say shyly, as I get my wallet out of my huge bag I call a purse. I finally found it and pulled out my debt card.
"$10.48" Mrs. Salazar says with a smile.
I hand her the money and grab my bag. I walk out of the corner store and look around. I don't like this town very much. Never have. I was really hoping I would get out of here after I graduated high school, but even at the top of my class I still wasn't able to make it to college. I always wanted to help people when I got to college, I wanted to be a social worker or a counsler. Maybe even a nurse. But I never got there. I walked alittle further to see if there was anything exciting going on in this sleepy town. There never was, so I don't know what I was looking for. As I got closer to the edge of town, I could hear the highway a good two miles north of town. I wanted to just walk out of here, and never turn back. Maybe I could become a singer or even play guitar for a band or a singer. I was pretty good at it and wanted to follow at least one of my dreams.
I turned around walking towards my little old house that looked like it should have been torn down long ago. As I got closer I could see my dad sitting on the porch. I never really liked him, not since he thought that it was a good idea to start ignoring me after he found out that I didn't make it into the college he wanted me to. I walked up the old creeky stairs.
"Hello dad." I said as I walked into the house. He never responded so I don't know why I bothered.
I was walking into the kitchen and smelled something delisious. I looked in the pot that was on the stove and saw that it was stew, but a thicker stew. I look to my left on the counter and saw the four out, great I guess I'm eating at the Cafe again. I walked up the three flights of stairs that led to my attic room. I choose to live up here after my father moved his new wife and son in. I didn't want to be anywhere near them. I unlocked my door, I walked in and set my bag on the office chair near my desk. I had gotten the chair from a grage sale a long time ago and was surprised that it still worked. I looked at the clock and noticed that it was three' o' clock. I had work in two hours. I decided to take a shower before work. I grabbed all my stuff and headed to the floor beneath me. I walked in and shut and locked the door behind me.

When I got out of the shower, I looked at the clock and saw that it was 3:30. I still had a long while before work. Oh well, might as well get over time. I walked back up to my room only in my towel, hoping that no one would see me as I did. I walked up the stairs and back into my room. I grabbed my underwear and bra. I put those on the slipped on my blue jean shorts and a blue and pink floral tank top. I dried and culrled my hair and put on a flower crown/head band. I grabbed my apron, purse, keys, and arnold palmer and walked down the stairs. As I was about to walk out the door, I could hear laughter and joking coming from the dining room. I could hear them talking about if Melissa's son had a good day at school. And I wondered why I had never been asked how my day was when I was still in school. I walked out the door and slammed it behind me, just to make sure they knew I was leaving.
I decided to ride my bike that day. I was getting closer to the Cafe. As I rode up I got more of a feeling that I didn't want to go to work. But I was already here so I might as well. I looked at my phone and It was only four in the afternoon. I walked into the Cafe and said hello to a few of the regulars that were there. As I walked behind the counter I saw a tuft of blond hair. I looked a little more and saw that there was a new guy working at the Cafe. I walked up quietly behind him and tried not to make a noise.
"Hello, I'm Darcy. Who are you?" I asked just loud enough for him to hear. He jumped and tunred around. He was actually very cute.
"Hello, I'm Theodore. But please call me Theo. And please don't do that again." He had an irish accent.
"Hello Theo. Why are you here?" I wanted to know why this new person was here and why he was working at the smallest cafe in Cali.
"I just moved here and needed a job. I saw that they were hiring and well here I am." He seemed like a happy person, he is so in the wrong place to have that kind of attitude.
"Oh, well where is Karen?" I needed to ask my boss what was going on before I really trusted this guy.
"She's in the back." he replyed
"Thank you."
I walked back to the back and saw Karen making cookies and some pies.
"Karen who is the new guy up front?" I asked as I put on the apron to help.
"His name is Theodore, and his family just moved here from Ireland. Why here of all places, I don't know. But they are here anyway." She had the exact same idea I had, why would they move to this tiny town in the middle of no where in California.
"Oh. Well is he working this shift with me? And does he know anything about how to make coffee?" I didn't feel like having to babysit someone while I'm trying to work.
"He worked at a coffee shop in the town he lived in before. So I'm sure he knows how to make coffee. And yes, he will be working with you tonight till close. So be nice and make a friend." She made it seem like I couldn't be nice. I CAN be nice, it's just up to wether I FEEL like being nice.
"One more question."
"Yes deary." She started calling me that after my mother left. She had become my mother a long time ago it seemed.
"Do you happen to have anything I can eat?" She knew what was going on at home and also knew of my condition. I have Celiac.
"Of course I do sweety." She pulled out a bowl and it had my favorite in it. Tator tot cassarole!!!
"OH MY GOSH THANK YOU!!!!" I practically screamed.
"Shhh, not so loud. Now your shift starts in a few minutes. Go out there and put a smile on that pretty face of yours."
I walked out from the back and had my bowl of tator-tot cassarole in one hand and monster in the other.
'You know you shouldn't drink those. They are so bad for you." I turned around to be face to chest with Theo. Yes, I said face to chest becuase I'm to short to be face to face.
"Well, as you can see, I don't really care what is good and what is bad for me." with that I turned around and walked towards the counter.
I put my bowl of cassarole on the little hidden shelf behind the counter and put on my apron. I grabbed my pad of paper and went around taking a few peoples order. When I came back I handed the orders to Theo, just to see if he could do it and how well he could. I looked up from eating and saw that he was actually doing well, He had already filled one order. I was impressed. Now lets see how he does with the after work rush.
