Chapter 1
The air conditioner in the place seemed to be very much broken. The hot summer air outside as well as the stuffy room inside made it particularly unbearable. And because the store wasn't small enough, there simply had to be teenage girls all screaming inside, waiting excitedly for their favourite band R5 to come for the meet-and-greet my boss Leigh had thought would be excellent for the business.
My cardigan, though thin, clung on uncomfortably to my frame, making my arms very itchy. I wiped away an annoying drop of perspiration on my nose, and then pushed back my fringe.
I never imagined to be back at work on an unbearably hot Saturday afternoon, but when Leigh dangled the promise of extra pay for overtime, as well as for working on the weekend, I couldn't resist. Being tight on money meant that I had to do whatever I could to make sure I had enough to keep me afloat.
I had to make sure that with the large crowd of people inside the store, nobody made away with anything, and I also had to make sure that the guests would be safe.
So basically I would be guarding the place while Leigh kicked back in the employee lounge behind, with a fully functional air conditioner as well as air free from the humidity and hormones brought on by teenage fan girls and boys.
Awesome.
The volume of the place grew by about a hundredfold. I turned back to see Leigh escorting the band inside. They smiled when they saw the fans, and the place just went crazy. The temperature shot up along with the noise, and I was already regretting my decision to leave my house for this just to earn some extra money.
Well, at least the band seemed happy. I sighed. It was going to be a long afternoon.

Finally, my break was here. I pushed my fringe out of my eyes, and then made my way to the employee lounge. I looked around. It appeared that there was no one. Leigh must've been in her own office, and since I was the only one there, I sighed in relief and then removed the cardigan and let my arms enjoy the coolness of the room.
My scars seemed to be healing nicely, but I knew that soon they would be fresh once again. It was little comforts like letting my arms feel cooler once in a while that made me really happy. The coolness of the air conditioner made me smile.
That was when the door opened, making me panic. Who else would be here? All my colleagues were busy preparing for some exclusive event that I wasn't invited to. That sucked. My cardigan was thrown halfway across the room, so reclaiming it would have been an issue. I had to settle for putting my arms behind my back.
The door flew open, and in walked in one of the blonde boys from R5. I, being the perfect employee I was, forgot to do my prior research, so I had absolutely no idea who was who. Of course, you get my sarcasm, don't you?
"Hi," he stated casually.
"Ah, hi?" I replied. "I don't think you're supposed to be here," I told him, as a matter of factly.
He looked sheepishly. "Ah, well, you see, my band members are kind of thirsty, and Leigh kind of told us to help ourselves, so..."
I shrugged. "Alright then, I suppose," I told him.
He grinned. "Thanks!"
I awkwardly stood there. I didn't know to do. What do you do when a famous rock star was in your employee lounge, and you have exposed and scarred wrists you'd do anything to hide because it's just embarrassing? "So, what's your name?" He asked trying to make small talk.
"Rhiannon," I replied.
"I'm Riker," he introduced, smiling. My goodness, he had a beautiful smile. To match his beautiful eyes.
Well where did that come from?
The room settles to another awkward silence, until Riker swore.
"Ah, Rhee," he said, "do you happen to know where the drinks are?"
I chuckled. It was rather amusing watching him source through the cupboards to no avail. I picked up my cardigan and threw it around my shoulders, and then walked towards the fridge. I opened it, and then beckoned Riker over. He seemed to finally realise that the drinks were cold, and then laughed sheepishly. "Thanks," he said.
I smiled. I got out five cans of cola for him, and then handed them to him one by one.
When I realised that he didn't have the hands to carry them all out by himself, I helped him carry two while he carried three, and I brought it out to his band with him. "Thanks," he smiled. I nodded in acknowledgement. The store was filled with visibly less fans now, much to my relief. I took my seat behind the cash register, and then sat there for the remaining two hours that the band was there for, simply watching the way they interacted with their fans.
It was sweet how they were so down to earth, and so thankful for each fan. By the time I closed the shop with them, I was pretty exhausted. Several fans had been rather nice and purchased a few CDs, but it may or may not have been because they wanted something to be autographed. There were also some that we're downright rude, giving me dirty looks.
When I finally closed up, the band wanted to stay a while longer, so I at least got to know them slightly better. Well, at least I knew their names. When they were about to leave, Riker approached me. "Hey, so do you want to hang it with us?"
Yes was at the tip of my tongue, about to be spat out, until I realised that despite earning money today, I was still struggling with rent at the moment. "I'm going to have to take up a rain check on that," I told a disappointed band member.
"Why?"
"Reasons," I told him.
"Can I at least have your number? So we can hang some other time?"
Was I really going to give this handsome and attractive and all adjectives that were good, boy I'd just met my number?
Nope.
What was wrong with me?
Everything.
Yep.
Fortunately, I was saved by Leigh. "What are you still doing here, Rhiannon? Go home!" When she saw Riker, she smiled at him. "I hope you guys enjoyed yourselves today!"
"Oh we did! Thanks so much-"
I didn't wait to hear what he had to say, before I was out of the store and on my way back home.
