"Alex!"
I looked up from my fork. It was Lana.
"Have you heard?"
"Heard what?" I paused my fork and let the quivering strand of spaghetti dangle.
"Sofia and William are official!" she raised her arms airily. "William won't bother you ever again!"
I relieved the strand by dropping the fork with a clang.
"You're not happy?" Allison studied my face.
"I..." I forced a grin. "Yeah...?"
Chance made me turn and I caught sight of WIlliam. He was sitting behind a table with Sofia opposite to him, and he was making Sofia blush. I felt something grip my heart and sqeeze, making it hard to breathe. Sofia caught my eye and lifted her head haughtily, flicking her bleached hair backwards.
"They're really sweet, aren't they?" Celia followed my gaze. "Nerd and nerd?"
"Not as sweet as me and Lana."
I turned, catching sight of Jacob, giving Lana a meaningful wink, which would make a normal girl's heart melt and swirl round and round like the wheels of a bus. But Lana was not a normal girl. On the contrary, she looked angry.
"Jacob," she said, barely keeping her voice steady, "can you tell me where you went after school yesterday?"
"I went to soccer practice." Jordan lied smoothly. I admit, I was impressed at his ability of not blushing nor blinking.
"Oh really?" Lana stood up. "Then why was Andria with you? I didn't know you had girls in the boy's soccer team."
" I..." Jacob grabbed Lana's arm. If the cafeteria had a head, it would have turned and stared at the couple. Everyone seemed to have sucked in a breath.
"Lana, I can eplain..." Jacob started.
And nope, this would not be the usual endings of relationships in romantic novels. Lana was a good girlfriend.
"Explain, then," she flung off Jacob's hand from her wrist.
"I went to get snacks for my teammates and Andria is the coach's daughter, so she offered to help me, and I didn't see why not. Lana, forgive me for giving you the wrong idea."
"That's obviously a lie," Georgina did it again. Her infamous loud whispers.
Lana ignored her friend.
"Oh Jacob," she looked up at her boyfriend, her eyes with so much gratitude it could flood all seven seas.
"Lana, I am and always will be faithful," Jacob took her hands in his calloused ones.
"Lie- again," Geogina hissed.
I knew Jacob. He was never tied down. Georgina was right. Lana was just being stupid, but it would be rude to break the moment.
Lana leaned in, and Jacob pulled her into a passionate kiss. I looked away. It wasn't true love, that was just a needy smack on the lips.
It was not a good decision to tear my eyes away, as my eyes found a new place to land, and that was where William and Sofia sat.
Sofia saw me looking and leaned in to William, hands reaching forward...
Ringgggg...
I never felt that relieved in my life. Sofia looked startled as she pulled away, grabbing her bag. Lana's lips were red and swollen, but they were wide open in a huge grin. Jacob had his hand around her waist. They seemed like a happy couple. Seemed.
