"Uncle Klaus?" Claire asked looking up from her drawing, "Yeah giggles?" said Uncle looked at the nine-year-old. "Can I ask you a question?" She asked, returning to her work once she had his attention. "Of course." "Why is aunt Vanya saving so much money?" The question made the german choke on his tea. Of fucking course, his niece would ask the one question that he didn't have the right to answer. He recovered from his coughing fit and called va-Ivan. "Hey!" His voice called over the phone. "Hola, mi hermano. Claire over here wants to know why you're saving a ton of money? Can I tell her?" the whisper asked his brother. A pause, and a sigh.
"She's going to find out sooner or later, may as well be sooner rather than later. With that done, can you please ask Allison to pick me up from practice? Thanks, gotta go bye!" Ivan hung up quickly like he didn't want to deal with it.
"Santa?" Claire curiously tapped his shoulder, getting slightly impatient. "Hi giggles, you asked me about your aunt, right." He took a deep breath, hoping that Claire wouldn't take as much time to grasp the concept as Luther had.
"ClaireyourauntisactuallyyouruncleandhispreferednameisIvan." "What?"
Klaus took another calming deep breath, she was a kid she obviously would get the wrong idea if he said it all in one breath. "You know how you make mistakes sometimes?" He sat down heavily on the couch "Yeah......." "Well, sometimes the gal up there makes mistakes too. " He pointed up to where Claire believed heaven to be.
"God's a girl?" She looked at him wide-eyed, disbelieving. "Duh, have you never heard that one song?" Claire reopened her mouth to speak but Klaus didn't give her time. "As I was saying, sometimes she makes mistakes too, and she messes up when making your aunt, you see Vanya was supposed to be a boy but god accidentally gave her the wrong body. So, now your aunt or uncle, if you will, has to work with doctors to fix it."
"And it costs money?" "Yeah." the german man sighed, pleased that Claire didn't look nearly as confused now. "Did you understand any of that?" "Yup." "good"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ivan pushed open the door, Klaus had evidently forgotten to tell Allison to pick him up, he was just glad that there were cabs willing to take him to the academy. Sighing, he unwound his scarf and walked to the dining room. There was nobody there except little Claire, trying to get to the cookie jar.
"Hey, Claire!" The Russian man waved at her softly, really hoping that Klaus had made sure she understood everything. His niece immediately straightened up and said "Wait right here." albeit a little confused, he did as he was told. Claire quickly ran off and returned in a minute, Klaus in tow. Her little arms were filled with packages and she was basically vibrating with excitement.
"What's going on?" He was a little suspicious of his family. "Uncle Klaus told me about your than-transitioning from my aunt to my uncle, so we made a little gift basket for you." giggles explained putting the presents on the table. Ivan smiled softly as he opened the first one, it was Claire's very own piggy bank.
"Claire...." He trailed off, feeling his eyes well up with tears. "No, givebacks. Santa told me that the process costs money. So, maybe this will help." Ivan wrapped his arms around the little girl, thanking his lucky stars that Allison had gotten the best kid. He pulled away, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
He opened the next present, a large trans flag stared back up at him, it had to be Klaus's idea. Ivan felt light arms ensnare him into a hug and another pair wiping away the sudden wetness on his cheeks.
He had never been happier.
