"Kiba, look out!" Ichigo's shaky voice managed yelled, shifting the old pistol in her hand towards her teammate. Careful, careful keep your hand steady... the female thought to herself. The male's dark eyes widen, then he suddenly ducked down. There! She pulled the trigger, hitting the infected beast in the middle of its head. With a thud, dark black red blood began to pool out of the wound. Kiba walked over to Ichigo, putting a hand on her shoulder.
"Thank you..." Kiba said, his voice was soft and horse from crying. Ichigo felt a pang in her heart for her comrade. He cared so much for his dog Akamaru, and he as blaming himself. If only Kiba had kept a better eye on him...
Ichigo heard footsteps rushing towards them. Groans and the off sounding rhythm of people sprinted made her blood ran cold. They had waited too long, Ichigo grabbed the boy's hand and began to run in the opposite direction. They never had enough time to catch their breaths or regain their thoughts.
They had been running and searching for Akamaru for the past two days, just the two of them. It was difficult; however they made it work, always watching each other's backs. In the end it didn't matter, not long after reaching the old mission spot they had found Akamaru's body torn apart and sprawled all over the road.
Akamaru went missing a few days earlier on a search mission and Kiba had begged our group's leader Sasuke to go searching for the lost dog. Sasuke wouldn't let him go alone and no one would volunteer to help except for the wide-eyed Ichigo. The two had been friends long before the illness took over. Their parents had actually been longtime friends; however those days were long gone. Those bonds had long ago been forgotten.
Ramming her shoulder into the red, wooden door of a seemingly empty house, Ichigo grunted. She turned round to see Kiba just standing there. Her eyes softened he was so lost, Ichigo hadn't seen him like this since the beginning of the horrible illness. When they had escaped the highschool. It was rough for them in the beginning.
"Kiba!" Ichigo yelled, but it made no difference. Kida's eyes held no emotion, no want for survival. "Kiba, I need your help!" Ichigo screamed as the grunts of the infected were getting closer. Finally the browned hair boy snapped out of his daze and ran over to help his teammate.
After the two tried to ram the door, it finally flung open. Barricading themselves in, the two ran up the stairs of the unknown building. After Ichigo checked the rooms, making sure they were clear they made camp in the master bedroom. Kiba, sat down onto the dusty bed. No one had been in the house since the beginning. The boy couldn't hold it back, not anymore.
He was alone. All alone. He had no one, his family was dead. The only one he could even think of that was possibly alive was his dead beat father whom left them. Why did he deserve his life and not them? Kiba's hands clenched up into fists.
"Kiba, I'm sorry..." Ichigo finally broke the silence. She couldnt take seeing him like this. She placed her gun down onto the dresser near the window. "Maybe we can get cleaned up and head back to the others in the morning" the female said, peaking out the window as the infected beast searched for the two. They were once their neighbors and people they saw around town, but not now...
Ichigo found a clean dark blue short sleeved shirt and changed into it. Since this all started Ichigo was convinced that everyone had long ago forgot about their feelings in order to survive. She knew she'd never get married, have kids, or even grow old with someone. It was just easier to keep them at arms length, but being in the bedroom alone with Kiba made her heart beat like a jackhammer in her chest. She couldn't remember the last time she felt like this.
Kiba finally let out a sigh and laid down onto the bed. He let his eyes fall closed, he wished that Ichigo never would have came with him. He was going to look for Akamaru regardless of what the Uchiha said. She was just a constant reminder that he had to go back and play pretend with the rest of the group. Try to rebuild society. It was all a load of shit. Nothing would ever be the same.Kiba had fallen asleep, so Ichigo had decided to stay up and keep watch. She watched out the window keeping an eye on all the infected making sure they never got close to the house. Hours passed and then the sound she hated the most rung out. A scream. The screams always haunted her dreams, there was nothing she could do if she left she doomed Kiba and herself. Staying in the safety of the house was the best option. She prayed silently that the person would make it.
The guilt ate at her every time she slept. The image of Akamaru's mangled body flashed into her mind. The infected eating at his corpse. They had gotten there hours too late. This was another death that was once again her fault. The imagine kept popping into her head. To most it was just a dog, but she understood the connection Kiba had to Akamaru.
She could hear the silent sobs coming from her friend. Walking over to the bed, she laid down next to him, his back facing her. "Kiba..." Ichigo whispered and his sobs became louder. She didn't think, she just coiled her arms around his waist, pulling him closer. Pressing her lips to the back of his neck, she whispered, "I'll be here for you, Kiba. No matter what..."
The sound of loud thuds and screeching woke up the two. The infected had gotten into the house. Panic set into their stomaches. They didn't know what to do. Ichigo lept to her feet and ran to the window. Oh my god... the house was surrounded. "We have a problem." Ichigo said choking back her tears.
Kiba knew what he had to do. Opening the window, he turned to look at the female. The only one who helped him. The only one who stood by him, he had to save her. "Ichigo, stay here. I'll lead them away... And... and.. when I lose them, I'll head back to the group and back to you. Even at the end of the world, I will protect you." Kiba told her. He finally told her, the feelings he had hidden for her. Quickly before they could bust down the door, Kiba pressed his lips to hers and jumped out the window.
Making as much noise as he could, he knocked on empty cars and knocked down a trash can. "Come on, you low lives! I'm gonna make you work for your meal!" Kiba yelled, the sound made all the infected billow out of the house. Turning on his heels, he ran making sure they followed him. He had to make sure Ichigo would be safe.
