"Youre Jai right?"
Jai turned to see the caracal from the bar standing with one hand on his hip and the other to his side. He was a lot taller than Jai anticipated, having to tilt his head slightly up to make eye contact. Seeing him up close, he had eyes of jade and malachite. He could notice the darkness under his eyes, the kind of darkness that comes from countless nights spent laying awake. The mutt was all too familiar with that. He also noticed the cat had whiskers missing, patches which were fully empty with a faint redness where the whiskers once were. Probably just genetics or something.
"Who's asking?" Jai responded.
"I noticed you and your buddies at the table talking about how you're in need of...supplies, and considering the fact that you look like shit and you had to borrow a dollar from your friend to put a song on the jukebox, I'm assuming you don't really have the funds to be buying right now."
Jai was stunned. Who comes up to someone and just says that??? And so calmly too??
"Okay wow first of all, rude. Second of all, I'm not interested in buying from some random dude who's wearing gloves like he's gonna kill me. So thanks, but no thanks." As Jai was about to turn around, the caracal pulled a small, red card out of his shirt pocket and held it between two fingers next to his face.
"Listen. We can offer you a lot of things, a lot more than just drugs. Think about it. We--"
"Is this some sort of cult shit or something? Not interested in enlightenment either, man."
The caracal paused for a second, silently piercing Jai's vision with a stare as strong as Medusa's.
"We'll be waiting." And with that, he handed Jai the red card and turned to walk away. Jai looked down at the card in his hand. It was a merlot red, with a crimson red spiral snake design, the head's mouth open following what looked like an upside down shot glass. Turning the card around revealed an address, and the words "9/15 11pm" and "bring no one" underneath. The mutt didn't know what to make of the card, let alone the interaction he just had. He reached for his phone and checked the date. September 14th. He walked home, thinking about what could be waiting at the address, and who or what he could be dealing with if he goes. I'll sleep on it, he thought, as he reached his front door. He walked inside, and was met with Spits on the couch and Cody in the kitchen. He checked the clock, 6:51.
"Hey there you are, where the hell have you been?? We got home and couldn't find you, you almost scared us both half to death. You gotta let us know when you leave the house dumbass," Spits said. She was watching some trash TV show, something about 90 days? Jai didn't bother asking what it was. He simply hummed as confirmation that he heard her, and continued walking to the kitchen, where he was met with Cody. He was cutting carrots and broccoli, most likely gonna make some veggie stir fry for the 3.
"Hey, you alright?" Cody asked, as Jai opened the fridge to get a can of pepsi and a cookie he put in there a few days earlier. "Yeah, I'm good. Had to get some fresh air you know." He hesitated, and debated whether or not to tell his brother about the strange interaction he had coming home. He decided not to tell just yet, as he walked to the couch to sit with his sister while they waited for Cody to finish cooking. Spits was mesmerised by this show, scoffing every now and then. "What're we watching?" Jai asked. "SHHH shut the hell up bitch these two just got in another argument."
Jai scoffed, and paid attention to the show. Within the first 5 minutes of watching, he too was completely invested in whatever the hell was going on with these random couples. When Cody finished cooking, he called the two to the table and as soon as they paused the TV, they both began complaining and obsessing over the show together. The whole dinner was spent listening to Jai and Spits talk shit about the people on the show, and Cody constantly asking if the food is okay. After dinner, the three decided to watch Cars 2 together then go to bed.
After showering and getting in bed, Jai looked at the red card again. He furrowed his eyebrows and flipped over in his bed to go to sleep.
